Prisoners, just like any ordinary person, should have the right to protect themselves. For decades now, sex in prisons across America has become, unfortunately, commonplace. Even the most heterosexual of men and women are at times forced into homosexuality as a form of punishment, a showing of dominance and at times, simply as a relief for an otherwise mundane existence. Because of reasons often traced back to what has caused the incarceration in the first place, prisons have become a breeding ground for many sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, AIDS, and many others. Healthcare in the prison system is basic and doesn’t offer much help. Many prisoners do not receive treatment for their diseases, leaving them to spread these deadly viruses onto massive numbers of other convicted prisoners. There should be something done about this, and that is to give them condoms.

Some say that distributing condoms in prisons and jails may also prevent taxpayers’ from eventually having to pay to care for the HIV-infected inmates. If prisoners transmit sexually transmitted infections or HIV/AIDS to each other, the public will have to spend the money to take care of them (Dr. June Reinisch, ABC News). Whether people are for or against sex in prisons is another can of worms; we need to think about the fact that our tax dollars will be spent. It is easier to just give them condoms, and it’s cheaper too. Whether we like it or not, sex in prisons does exist, and always has. The reality is that individuals do have sex in prison. However, good data should be maintained documenting both the perceived benefits, and any problems that might develop after the distribution of condoms (Dr. Fred Berlin, ABC News). Pros and cons of course should be heavily weighed before distributing condoms in prisons/jails, but this approach is definitely worth trying
