Many schools that enforce dress code are often more focused on student dress code laws than any other current problems going on in the school. Tom Houlihan, a former superintendent, stated that “school uniforms are a distraction from focusing …show more content…
on systematic and fundamental transformation to improve our schools”. When teachers and other faculty members are often busy worrying that every kid is following dress code, they do not get time to worry about other problems such as bullying and how students are performing in school. Schools that do enforce dress code should be more focused on making sure all of their students are passing their classes. Worrying to much about dress code can also be very time wasting when teachers should be actually teaching their students instead of yelling at them about the way they are dressed.
Another reason that i disagree on dress code being enforced into schools is because it eliminates freedom of self-expression.
Kids should be able to dress how they want to and express themselves in a way that other kids may not. According to the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada “allowing students to choose their clothing is an empowering message from the schools that a student is a maturing person who is entitled to the most basic self-determination.” A child should be able to choose their own clothing showing that they are mature enough to dress appropriately without a dress code being enforced. Schools also remove the option of various social causes. How is a kid supposed to support something like Breast Cancer Awareness when school dress code restricts the colors of their clothes to school colors or something as simple as black, blue, and maybe white. In other cases dress code may be taken too seriously in some schools. In the court case Richards v. Thurston, a boy got in trouble for refusing to cut his hair shorter and the court ruled that “compelled conformity to conventional standards of appearance does not seem justifiable part of the educational
process.
A final reason that i think dress code should not be enforced into schools, even though there are probably many more, is that most kids in schools will probably oppose dress code. A study by researchers at the University of Nevada found that 90% of 7th and 8th graders did not like wearing uniforms. When kids oppose dress code it will cause them to want to change it in anyway possible. When that happens schools are forced to focus on dress code trying to figure out to punish that child and make sure it doesn't happen again instead of working in the classrooms with the rest of their students.
The three reasons i believe that school dress code should not be enforced into schools is because faculty focus more on dress code that other problems, dress code eliminates freedom of self expression, and dress code will be opposed by most students. There are so many problems with dress code that are causing problems in schools that teachers and faculty either can’t fix or take too much time out of the day to deal with. So if your kids were coming home with bad grades and you didn’t know why, wouldn’t you want something to change?
