Why I Want to Study Fashion
Fashion is a miraculous world of fantasy and hard work that I would be thrilled to enter, and the studies at the XXX could open the gate to this exciting world for me.

I opted for fashion design as a major as I have always been attracted by the power of transformation that trendy clothing gives a person. I enjoyed inventing clothing for my dolls when I was a child, and enjoyed seeing the same old plaything take on a different look each time I gave her different apparel. I also loved to see my mom and aunts put on trendy things and turn into fabulous-looking princesses.

When going to in high school, I most of all enjoyed drawing and painting. I love using a rich palette of colors in my works. My skills were often awarded with prizes in high school. Among the various courses we were offered at school, my favorite ones were the two fashion classes I took in one of my school years. I scored well in both of them. Overall, I used to be a good student, and the school administration always placed my picture in the lobby of the school.

I have a multi-cultural background that combines very different experiences. I first came to the US when I was three years old. Later I went back to China when I was in junior high school. Thus I combine two different backgrounds, supported by the knowledge of the two languages: English and Chinese.

In China, I kept pursuing a career in fashion that is my priority dream and aspiration. I had a course in drawing. In the US I added to my experience working in a fabric company in Manhattan. This was a great experience too, sharing the vibrant life of the New York City fashion world.

My dream is to become a professional fashion designer and be able to say a new world in apparel making. At the moment I enjoy designing my own clothing, as it gives me the possibility to stand out from the crowd and differ in style from my peers. I am bored by the people who would always wear the same style and fashion and enjoy adding fresh ideas to

A close second interest is in the artistic field. I feel that being creative is a great skill to have because it helps to discover new ideas and new methods of problem solving. I feel that being artistic doesn’t mean you have to know how to draw or paint. In my opinion, I think that art can be expressed though your own personal gifts, such as being a creative writer or being a motivational speaker. I feel that the drawing aspect of life is very important to me because as a child, no matter where I was, I could always pick up a pencil and a piece of paper and visit a different…

The Fashion Institute of Technology can also help me realize my goal, which is to become a great artist. The curriculum for the fine arts program teaches 2D, 3D, sculpting and more. I am the perfect candidate for the Fashion Institute of technology because I am inquisitive; I am always craving more knowledge no matter what the topic - I am a leader, I enjoy coming up with fresh, new ideas and I am an intensely passionate person. Though, unlike many other FIT applicants, I haven’t always had a “passion for fashion”. Growing up, I wanted to be an Architectural engineer. It wasn’t until someone close to me gave me my first Michael Kors handbag my 8th grade year that I began to develop the passion I have now. Handling this bag was when realized my obsession with high-end fashion was only beginning. I was amazed at the production work put into making the merchandise. Of course the beauty of fashion is interesting, but what…

    Growing Up In Ethiopia

Growing up in Ethiopia, a third world country where opportunities come few and far between, medicine, law, and engineering are all at the forefront of these limited opportunities and overly frequented options for college students. At an early age, I uncovered my love for helping others, but to my parents’ surprise my passion was for helping my girlfriends put outfits together or helping them shop for clothes, not helping an ill person regain their health in a white coat. As I began to mature, so did my taste and understanding of the fashion industry. After relocating to America, I learned that the industry is much more than raveling in the season’s latest designs or playing dress up. The industry requires a keen understanding of the various aspects of business. From an in depth knowledge of marketing necessary to efficiently publish magazines to the attention to detail and micro management required to produce the runways shows, or the macro management experience that’s a must in order to oversee a styling company. I was astonished and even more so motivated by the business empires that are household names across the world, including the numerous fashion companies, and intrigued like never before by what takes place behind the scenes to build them from the ground up. I soon fell into the expansive world of business head first when I took an introduction class to business as a freshman in high school, in addition to a quantitative literature class to provide me with the bases for understanding the math involved, as well a college level Introduction to Business course during my senior year at a nearby community college.…
