By doing the self-assessment, I learned that I need improvement in the areas of Adopting lifelong learning. Most of questions concerning critical thinking and analyzing, is a problem that I have. I scored low in this inventory because my weaknesses is defined my procrastination and laziness. I was surprised of my scores; I begin to notice the struggles of resisting to learn new ideas and skills. I view these concepts as boring sometimes, instead of understanding that empowerment is the key to success and not procrastination. I feel terrible about my lower scores but that’s motivation for room of improvement. If I continue to repeat the same old habits, I’m aware that failure will be my detour. However, if I correct my mistakes now, success is right around the corner. During the course of this semester, I plan to convert my fears into mental play.
Journal #2 Surface culture choices: Race and Ethnicity of Students and The Age of Students
(PART 1) My two surface culture choices that differ from my current school compared to my pervious school is; Race and ethnicity of students and the Age of students.
Race and ethnicity at my high school consisted of minorities only, as supposed to college, diversity is everywhere. In every classroom I entered in high school, I seen students who shared my culture values or beliefs as well as students who share the same social class. Here in college, there seems to be a large sense of students that either share those same attributes or have different ones. I’m interested in learning about different cultures and ethnical classes considering that my high school lye in a poor underclass neighborhood where only a selected group of individuals would attend. During the time I spent in high school, I never seen other races swamp through the hallways or enter into common rest areas after lunch like I do here. Overall, students here in college seem to that attended a high school with a mixer of diversity, I on the other hand feel left out from the experience. Some of the students that I talked to here in college share their comfortable topics pertaining to not having to adjust at all to the diversity. They feel relaxed and comfortable with being around different cultures and people who don’t share their same attributes. I’m trying to understand and get the feel of what it’s like to be in an open environment where we are all different. After all, in the work place just like college, it will be the same.
The age of students at my high school ranged from 15 to 19 years old. Here in college, the age range is quite different. I met students who are in their late 40’s early 50’s or even 60 years old. In most of my classes this semester I met students who are taking classes with their parents or other relatives who share their same interest. Overall, students here in college seem to be about a 10 to 20 year difference compared to high school. I believe the age difference sets a standard when it comes to responsibilities. Students here in college, mostly because age ranges take school a lot more serious than the students at my high school. Students here are determined to complete courses and move to the next phase in life. In high school, students procrastinated and weren’t concerned about being responsible.
(PART 2)
The two deep-culture features that I choose are: College Education and Learning My high school peers didn’t consider a college education as imperative. Most students believed that getting a good job after graduation was the best role for them. I on the other hand knew where I was headed after graduation simply because of generations before me attended some type of higher educational institution. My peers were not motivated or considerably uninterested with the concepts of doing another four years of learning. They believed that school was a waste of time and since their parents didn’t do much with their lives they shouldn’t either. Most students didn’t know how to start the process or felt that they couldn’t find a school that would accept them because of their grades. I never considered another option, and I think that wasn’t the case for my friends. During my senior year, I met with guidance counselors who could help me apply for schools and show me how to apply for federal assistance. I feel bad for students would do not choose this road; this is the best option for any young adult life. When I see people who I graduated with working at fast food restaurants or grocery stores, I begin to think that they could have applied themselves the way I did.
Learning at my high school was not important for most teachers and student. The beliefs of most students were limited by certain thought processes that parents, students and teachers played a major role in. I would say that the teachers only cared about the students to a certain extent. Teacher’s only concerns were about passing (Exams/ STAR) and not caring about the student’s life after graduation. The way I see it is, teachers were not preparing students for the next chapters in life, they were preparing students for (Right NOW). The problem was that most students dropped out or decided that dreams were being deterred because of the support systems from faculty and parents. I wouldn’t solely blame this failure on the teachers themselves, sometimes it was the students fault as well. Students didn’t want to apply themselves by studying hard or finding other alternatives to succeed. Learning is important and at my high school most of the students were very eager to achieve and others didn’t care. I enjoy learning, that’s why I stayed on top of my studies because at the end of the day, it’s only up to me to succeed.
Journal #3 Identify one skill you’ve learned simply because you enjoyed learning One thing I enjoyed learning was how to do hair. A. I gathered the information needed to learn this skill by watching my older cousin do hair. B. I practice this skill on my doll’s head which helped me to improve. C. I also practiced doing my own hair which took some time. D. I engaged in learning this on a daily bases. E. I spent hours rehearing; I got tired and restarted the process which took several hours. F. The feedback I received was awesome, the outcome of my own hair enabled me to started doing others hair. G. I felt confident; I was able to do my hair as well as others with no assistance. H. The rewards were my customers.
As a child, I watched my older cousin do hair. This skill fascinated me so learning the how-two’s was important. Being the youngest out of five children, I became eager to grow older and learn how to fix other people hair. I first started off practicing on dolls hair which promoted me to doing my own hair. Not a day went by I didn’t try to improve my skills. I consistently engaged in learning with basic braids, ponytails and curls. I spent hours, sometimes days completing hair projects alone. Eventually, I became hooked and others complimented me on my hair styles. As a result, I begin to get customers, my friends and their friends which led to a strong cliental. I’m proud of my success, and others are proud of my skills.
