William Herschel grew up as a musician. His father was a musician for the military and naturally began learning and playing with his father. He had always had a fascination with stars and later moved away from Germany to spend more time as an amateur astronomer. What initially led to his discovery was taking many nights understanding and observing the sky. Because of his keen observations he was quick to discover when he noticed something peculiar. He noticed that this was unlike any comet he had seen before and soon discovered it was a planet.
He had discovered Uranus on March 13th, 1781. This exciting discovery led to many more successes as he was knighted by the King and became the court’s official astronomer.
