William Lloyd Garrison
I, William Lloyd Garrison am a leader of the American anti-slavery movement, and in my later years I was also an advocate for women’s suffrage. I feel as though slavery should be non-existent because I’m an abolitionist. Unlike my buddy Benjamin Lundy I feel that all Negros should be free immediately instead of a gradual process. The goal of the American anti-slavery movement is for slavery to be illegal in the United Sates of America, which would lead to all males having the same rights regardless of color. In order to bring about change I have used the power of freedom of speech and freedom of press to make my newspaper called the Liberator. This newspaper helps instill anti-slavery ideology into the general public, thus swaying the general public to the anti-slavery side. The federal government could surely help with the movement’s goal by creating a law banning slavery, or at least help distribute anti-slavery propaganda. At this time in history the press wasn’t television or the internet you just had the printing press, so they best way for the media to express things was through newspapers and pamphlets, and I feel my group and I have done a superior job spreading anti-slavery ideology across the nation. The American anti-slavery movement’s goal of outlawing slavery was one of the leading causes for the civil war. It also led to Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which called for all slaves to be released and have the same rights and privileges as white people do. In conclusion, the movement I was apart of helped spark the fight for slavery to become illegal, and eventually slavery was outlawed in the United States of America.
