At the age of twenty-four, Norbert Rillieux was a teacher of applied mechanics at a school in Paris. In 1830, he put out a series of papers about steam economy and steam engine work, a prelude to his invention involving steam. In fact, it was during the time that he was writing these papers, most likely, that he created his theory about multiple effect evaporation. Between 1884 and 1854, he created the Rillieux apparatus, a revolutionary invention. In 1864, he patented his first model, and advanced the system for eight more years, and received more patents. It took him ten years to create the final model because he was black, and there were prejudices he had to deal with in addition to his invention.…

Katherine DunhamLegendary dancer, choreographer and anthropologist, Katherine Dunham was born on June 22,1909 in Chicago, to an African American father and a French Canadian mother. She sang in her local Methodist Church in Joliet; but for a financial crisis at her church, she might never have sung anything but gospel songs. At age eight, she amazed and scandalized the elders of her church by doing a performance of decidedly non-religious songs at a cabaret party, in order to raise money. She never thought about a career in dance. Instead, she consented to her family's wish that she become a teacher and followed her brother, Albert Dunham Jr. to the University of Chicago, where she became one of the first African American women to attend this University and earned bachelor, masters and doctoral degrees in anthropology.…

The motorized vacuum cleaner was invented by Hubert Cecil Booth of England in 1901. While it was not originally meant to be sold, the bulky contraption would receive an electric powered overhaul, but was still so bulky it required a horse carriage to be transported. After receiving his parents in 1901, he would lose in competition to a fellow competitor in the vacuum market, “Hoover.” This item is now a part of our everyday lives and has made cleaning households and keeping them in healthy living condition reasonably easy.…

The very first machine using the vacuum principle was patented by Ives W. McGaffey in 1869. His cleaner was manually powered, operated by turning a hand crank. This design made it difficult to operate, as it had to be pushed along the floor at the same time as turning the handle. There were many machines of this type shortly afterwards, with the first electrically driven version ‘carpet sweeper' patented in 1900.…

Are you tired of being hot? Well, air conditioners are your friend. In 1902, the first modern electrical air condition was invented by Willis Haviland Carrier. The reason for it was to solve some problems a printer was having with papers in the summer (“Title” 1). Air conditioners and refrigerators worked the same way. Instead of cooling just the small, insulated space inside of a refrigerator, an air conditioner cools a room, whole house, and/or entire business. Air conditioners use chemicals that easily convert gas to a liquid and back again.…
