Windshield Survey
My Windshield Survey took place in Brick Township, New Jersey in May 2013. Brick is a fairly large, somewhat densely populated community in Ocean County. I would characterize Brick overall as clean, prosperous, safe and growing. Areas of concentration for this study, with a healthcare focus, are as follows:
1. Community vitality
2. Indicators of social and economic conditions
3. Health resources
4. Environmental conditions related to health
5. Social functioning
6. Attitude toward healthcare
Community Vitality
Brick Township appears to be largely middle-class with some lower middle class areas. Residential areas are populated predominately with single-family homes or condominium developments. The overwhelming majority of these homes appear to be well maintained with cars in comparable condition. In the course of my survey, done during one weeknight and one weekend day, there seems to be active, engaged residents tending to their homes and their day-to-day business. During this time I saw no evidence of homelessness or overt poverty in both business and residential areas. I have no reservations as characterizing Brick as a healthy, vital community.
Indicators of Social and Economic Conditions
Shopping areas for Brick are many and varied. All manner of stores, ranging from neighborhood markets to national corporations are well represented. Brick is situated off of two major highways (Route 70 and 88) and two main roads cutting through town (CR 528 & 549), and as such both mini-malls and major shopping center are prevalent throughout the town. Most of these businesses appear to be prosperous, with considerable foot traffic and an automotive presence in the parking lots. In terms of education, Brick is also well represented with both public and private schools. There are also multiple parks and fields (some directly connected to the schools) with well-kept grounds, crossing guards, bus stops and no graffiti I observed. My observations lead me to

Hanston Township is a little, countryside town that had the arrival of new people in the community. The residents have an extensive history in Hanston and are very acquainted with one another. Since it is easier to access and the development of houses and apartments has increased, the schools, services from the city, medical services, educational opportunities, and cultural opportunities need to be developed. The town lacked diversity until the new residents began to move there. Hanston has to make some accommodations in order to keep up with the changes that are occurring quickly. The mayor appointed a committee to research the changing circumstances, identify which areas immediately need to be fixed, and to come up with some solutions.…

Flemingdon Park is located in the North York region of Toronto. It is home to approximately 22,000 residents mainly from foreign places. This collective population accounts for approximately 0.8% of Toronto’s total population. This paper will thoroughly cover the diverse demographics of Toronto’s “Apartment City.” The conclusions will be drawn through strategically chosen features of the community’s demographics in relation to planning principles. Aspects that will be touched upon will include; age, gender, ethnicity/immigration and income in reference to dwelling types. By exploring such facets of the community, one will be able to depict the demographics of Flemingdon Park, thus the planning ideals as well. Furthermore, these numbers will then allow us to make a comparison between the City of Toronto as a whole and Flemingdon as a region. Careful analysis and interpretation of these sets of data will lead to a further understanding of Flemingdon and its social and developmental components. This information will give insight into the methodology and reasoning behind specific planning decisions. We will begin this study by examining the age groups within the neighbourhood, and then strategically progress and conclude with more specific findings with reference from Statistics Canada.…

Windshield damage is a common occurrence and something that is unavoidable in some circumstances. You could be driving along the street and a penny size pebble hits your windshield. The resulting damage could be astronomical or so small that you barely notice the damage. Overtime, the small crack could escalate into a monumental problem. The good news is that it is possible to repair a damaged windshield. However, repairs depend on a number of other factors too.…

It’s mainly been difficult because the chemical and naval corporations in the vicinity are unwilling to negotiate with the community to redevelop, forcing this community to be physically pinned down. Also, unfortunately local government hasn’t been helpful either. Therefore, my prospective on how the community is addressing these issues has changed, and how I see gentrification issues of the community. Lastly, due to these external factors, families rather work on and combat other tangible social justice issues, such as immigration, food insecurity and healthcare mainly because they can directly see the results of their…

Wallington, New Jersey is a borough in Bergen County, with a population of a little over 13,000. It officially became its own borough in 1895, comprised of land formerly belonging to two other townships. The resulting combination forms a heart-like shape. It borders the Passaic River and was long undeveloped due to its propensity to flood frequently. At the beginning of the 20th century draining systems were put in place that simultaneously prevented flooding and provided water for the entire community. This system was upgraded and perfected throughout the century, but it was this initial improvement that began the boost in growth and economy. Beginning as a farming community, known for its produce and dairy, it has since evolved into a classic New Jersey small town.…
