#1 Check Your Chemicals
Before you shut down your pool, you need to test the chemical levels of your pool using a chemical testing kit. You are going to want to test the calcium hardness, alkalinity and pH levels.

Ideally, you want the pH to be between 7.4- 7.6, alkalinity between 80-120 ppm and calcium hardness between 180 -220 ppm.
#2 Clean The Inside Of Your Pool
Next, clean the inside of your pool. Purchase a biodegradable pool cleaner to clean the inside of your pool. Use it to scrub along the waterline. Remove all buildup that could stain the liner of your pool. Make sure you also scrub the top rails and uprights in your pool as well.
To effectively clean your pool liner, you should drain all of the water out of your pool. Use a sump pump to drain the water out of your pool. After you clean it the pool liner, refill your pool with clean water for the winter. When you refill your pool, don’t fill it all the way. Keep the water level a little lower for winter storage purposes.
Clean your pool equipment as well. Clean the pool filter and make sure that it is debris free. You may want to install a new filter for the winter.

Make sure you removed all of the play equipment from the pool. Put your winter skimmer into the pool and take out your summer skimmer. Make sure you winterize your pool’s filter, heater and pump according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Before putting the pool cover on your pool, clean it off well. You don’t want to transfer any biological and chemical debris via the cover into the pool. Use the biodegradable soap you used to clean the pool liner to clean the pool cover as well.
Add an air pillow to your pool, anchor it in the center of your pool. Inflate the air pillow about ¾ of the way. If you fill it up all the way, it could pop during the winter due to the pressure ice will put on the air filter.
An air pillow creates a little mountain in the middle of your pool. When your pool freezes, the ice will push towards the air pillow instead of to the outside walls of your above-ground pool. This will put less pressure on your above-ground pool and help it weather the winter better.
