Wisdom In Dr. Ben Carson's Book America The Beautiful
While reading Dr. Ben Carson’s Book America the Beautiful I kept being reminded of something I continually forget. Being in College you would think I would be reminded of this something everyday of my life. After all isn’t it what I am here at College for? What is it you may ask? The fact that knowledge is power, but even more importantly knowledge is wisdom.
When Dr. Ben Carson was in elementary school he did not have the greatest grades in the world. Subsequently he began to believe that because his grades were poor that he himself was not intelligent enough or good enough and that there was nothing he could do to change that. As his grades declined even further his self-esteem declined right behind them. Luckily Mr.Carson had a mother that knew he was far more than what his grades said or what he thought himself about himself. His mother pushed him to push himself to greater lengths than he had ever wanted or thought he could go.In his book Mr. Carson says,“Because of all the reading she had encouraged me to do,I was very motivated to learn and took it upon myself to

I think that the younger generations need to look back and remember the older generations. We are beginning to forget where and what this nation came from and stood for. Knowledge and hard work are being replaced by ignorance and laziness. We don't seem to take education as seriously as previous generations and have lost our appreciation for it. We want to graduate High school and then College with as little effort as possible and then we want to put that same lack of effort into our job. We are a generation consumed with ourselves and our entertainment. Somehow we have tricked ourselves into the belief that all we have to do is to sit back and do nothing and the cash will keep on flowing in. But as Benjamin Franklin said, “He that waits upon fortune is never sure of dinner.” Knowledge is

One of the most famous quotes in history is “Knowledge is Power” an expression that means the more knowledge you gain the more powerful you are as an individual. In the short story “The Birthmark”, by Nathaniel Hawthorne and the two poems “English B”, by Langston Hughes and “Crazy Courage”, by Sherman Alexie, the authors describes individual knowledge and power through the same idea, but through different methods.…

Millennials have come into a negative light in the eyes of many being blamed for problems in the world today. In Joel Stein’s article entitled The New Greatest Generation he believes they will instead of causing problems bring solutions to them and I agree with him. The millennials are a generation possessing much more resources and technology than any other generation before them by a long shot. The technological advances made from the 1980s to the early 2000 have opened a world of possibilities that millennials will and are taking advantage of to get further in life.…

Dr. Carson was invited to speak to students a school in Chicago. Before he spoke, Dr. Carson attended a reception where many different school officials and religious leaders told him about the troubled school that he was going to speak at. All the rumors caused the doctor to worry about the welcome he would receive from students. When he walked into the auditorium of the school his worries vanished as students applauded, and cheered for their guest speaker. For his speech, Dr. Carson told a story about being seen as cool or being seen as a nerd. It started with the cool guy having a nice car, a beautiful girlfriend, a varsity jacket, and what seemed like the perfect and ideal life. Then there was the nerd riding on the bus with an armful of books and a very low social status. After a few years, the cool guy did not do well in school and ends up working at a fast-food restaurant while the nerd gets a scholarship and heads off to college. A few more years go by and the cool guy still works at the fast-food place and is still cool. The nerd finishes college and takes a job at a Fortune 500 company and gets contacts, some suits, and a new car. All the girls in his old neighborhood then want to know him, not the "cool"…

The phrase “Knowledge is power”, means that a person’s future awareness will increase with everything that they learn. As in Fredrick Douglas’s life, and within my own, our awareness has increased by learning about other people, even if not by our own choice. Though my own experiences have not been as drastic as Fredrick’s, they have been pretty wild.…

Not only does it affect us now, it will also affect through the span of our life time. So why not show the older adults and peers that we are not who they think we are. We are better. We show that it isn't just a person that can change the world it can be a team. Generation Y is an innovative generation of millenials that work together to make this world a magnificent place, a place of new ideas and creations. We are a generation that works smart, not hard and because of that it makes us look lazy. However, because of the groups we work in and how we get the work done, at the end it shows that we do work hard. Saying that this generation is always being lazy is a misconception. In regards to a personal connection, Edith is going to school full time and is working two jobs. She manages to keep her grades at a outstanding point and manages a social life along with all of her other responsibilities. Andre is a young man who also goes to school full time and once again, works at best buy along with many other time commitments. Allie goes to school full time and works as a certified nursing assistant along with many other commitments. This goes to show that this generation is not full of slackers and that there is hard working individuals that are part of the millennial title. We have yet to change everyone's mind but by taking one step at a time and using our voices to the best of our ability. We can change the…

He became the “object of ridicule” (“Ben Carson Biography”) to the other classmates and helped develop his uncontrollable temper. Carson once wrote that “once he reached the boiling point, he lost all rational control”. In the seventh grade, he “attacked a much bigger boy with a combination lock after being called ‘dumb’”. This blow tore a three-inch gash in the boy’s head. In the ninth grade, after a boy threw a rock at him, Ben threw a much bigger rock back and “shattered the boy’s glasses and nose”. It reached a crescendo when he nearly stabbed his friend during an argument over which radio station to listen to. Ben took a “camping knife out of his back pocket and lunged at his friend” (Foster), and nearly stabbed him. Though Carson lost all control of himself, the knife miraculously snapped when it hit the victim’s belt buckle. The experience terrified Carson, and he “ran home and locked himself in the bathroom with a Bible and started praying, asking God for help with his temper”. He finally “found solace in a passage of the book of Proverbs that went ‘Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city’”. This line gave Ben the understanding that he made any and all events that “were not to his liking” (“Ben Carson Biography”) his problem, and derived his anger from this. He realized that he got angry for unjustifiable reasons. When he…

In Malcolm book, The Story of Success, he makes a very important point in the book regarding hard work and success. He argues that 10,000 hours of practice of a certain skill will allow someone to be a professional at that skill. However, in an article in response to Malcolm's argument, Temple's argues that a person must not only practice for 10,000 hours, but also be naturally gifted, or “wired”, to master that particular skill. Temple's argument is correct for a number of reasons.…

There is a certain positive position taken when the words knowledge and individual power are placed together. As my mind flooded with emerging ideas to define my feelings and thoughts on these words I kept coming back to independence, healthy self esteem and accepting. Reading through the assigned stories and poems and there analysis by others, I found that they too concluded a certain theme of accepting others once they were more informed. My view and the excerpts from Lauren Axelrod well written analysis below seem to be the same. Knowledge gives self empowerment.…

Dr. Ben Carson was working at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. This is where he did the first operation of dividing craniopagus twins.
