Wisteria is a normal woman of the community. She works as an Instructor of Nines. She has a spouse named Aspen, who works as a Assistant of Elders. They have not signed up for children yet, because they are such a new couple. Both, Aspen and Wisteria have pale eyes, but Wisteria has a darker shade. Wisteria has great respect to the elders and The Giver. Aspen is quite a downer and thinks on the darker side of things, but Wisteria seems to cheer him up ( a little bit). All is normal until the unthinkable happens...Everyone in the community is gathering for the Age Ceremonies, including the Giver. Wisteria is very excited because one of her best friend’s, Jessimay, who was a birthmother, baby is going to be named. She is excited because …show more content…
she hopes that her friends first product was successful. On the other hand, Aspen is complaining about a headache. Wisteria urges him to get some numbing medicine, but he refuses saying that they should use the medicine on somebody more meaningful. Wisteria is puzzled by this, but pushes it off as nothing and continues wondering about the day to come.
Act 2 As the ceremony starts, the chief elder addresses the community as normal, but in the middle of her grand speech an Assistant of Elders comes and whispers in the Chief Elder's, whose eyes immediately widen with unspoken fright. The Elder takes out a vial of a smooth, shimmery liquid and swallows the entirety of the container. She continues her speech. Wisteria leans in to ask Aspen if he knows what the substance is. In a moment, several people start to spaz as if they were having a sesure, including Aspen, and with a few large gasps they fall dead. Everyone starts running around scared of what is about to happen, but in the midst of everybody's panic some unknown smoke comes in and everyone breathes it in.
Everyone starts to gasp and panic more, but soon everyone is on the floor in peaceful slumber. When Wisteria wakes, she is in a pitch black room with dozens of other people. As she finally gets adjusted to the dark, lights flash on, small screeches of unoiled doors follow. All the elders enter, The Giver is not in sight. The Chief elder smiles and says “The Memories will soon be contained. The Giver has been contained for questioning on this strange phenomenon.” After, she finished they started taking people inside a well lit room (one by one). Wisteria is puzzled by the curtness of the matter, but she couldn’t help feeling a weird sickening feeling in her stomach, as if something was missing. Soon she realizes that it is the feeling of loss. Suddenly, she is hit with a sudden burst of memories. They start playing in her mind over and over again. They go from happiness to sadness and back again, then it stops. Wisteria looks around the room to see that everyone has changed (she finds it beautiful). Immediately, an elder pokes her and tells her it is time. Instead of acting normal she lashes out saying, “ I have seem the memories! I have felt
every emotion! They should not be taken away from us! We should be able to choose at least! You don’t know what is right for us!” The elders are stunned. The chief elder says, “ You don’t know what you're saying child. How about we get rid of these terrible emotions, like the others?” Suddenly, the chief elder is tackled by a citizen. Soon all the others are shouting with Wisteria. They start running out of the room and into the hallways and out of the community into lush forests, full of colorful flowers. The citizen who tackled the Chief elder takes Wisteria aside to thank her. Wisteria is a little surprised by this. She is not a great leader, she never asked to be one either. The citizen continues about when she said those memories started coming into their minds in waves. When Wisteria went to look at the massive sea of faces she saw a certain light to them. A word popped into her mind, lightning. With a breath of relief, she turns to face everyone. “We can overthrow these dictators we call elders. They can take our lives, but they can’t take out memories!” That is when a drone flies overhead. Suddenly, Wisteria lifts into the sky and taken to the abandoned community. She hits a tree as she flouts and passes out. The last thing she hears is a ear shattering scream. When she wakes she sees the Giver beside her . She asks him about what is happening and why they had memories. He tells her that his old apprentice, Jonas had died along with his brother Gabe. He also says that the people they took were killed, for they thought that their was nothing the elders could do about their corruption. The elders are protected against the memories for they had ingested a special serum to make them immune to the changes. The chief elder enters with a small syringe. She says, “If you just let me inject you all of the troubles will go away.” They both say no. “You don’t know anything. Those people out in the forest are going to die.” Wisteria responds fiercely saying, “I would rather die with memories of happiness than with memories of nothing.” With that she tackles the chief elder. In their tussle The Chief Elder accidentally stabs herself with the needle. The Giver and Wisteria run out of the room. Wisteria wants to get the others so they get on a drone. They soon find the people and take them back to the community. Act 3
After, everyone is safe in the community. Wisteria is relevied, but just as she feels the happiness. The Giver tells her that it is his time. Without warning he walks into abyss, never to be seen again. Wisteria replies that he was telling her that she must become the leader. Wisteria empowers herself with this and takes her leadership. She finally states, “We fear no city and we fear no man.”
