Without Meeting Jerry's Pretend Mom Summary
I can’t believe the writer left for Mexico without attempting to meet Jerry’s pretend mom. “I decided that I should not leave the mountains without seeing her and knowing for myself why she had done this thing.” When the writer said this, I thought she would follow through. Jerry is a perfect boy with no problems, how would his mom and the writer reject him? The writer is confused how Jerry still receives gifts from his mom, like the skates he got for Christmas. Why would someone forsake Jerry, but still send him gifts. If she can afford gifts, why not afford to keep him? The writer’s mission is to find out why.

The writer wants to figure Jerry’s mom out, but she doesn’t ever try. When she went to the orphanage at the end and asked about Jerry’s mom, it was “out of the question” to see her because she was in such a rush. Why now of all times to ask about her, she is in “more of a hurry than” she expected to be. Obviously, she can’t learn anything, because Jerry’s mom doesn’t exist. Her not knowing doesn’t affect why she never tries to find Jerry’s mom. Even if Jerry’s mom existed and everything Jerry has told her is true, she would have still never met her. She broke her vow by doing this, she left the mountains before knowing why Jerry’s mom has left Jerry.

But she changes her mind, she leaves, not staying and meeting the mother in Mannville. “I did not take time to go to Mannville to see Jerry’s mother, nor to talk with the orphanage officials about her.” The writer blames it on her work, while her work is important to her, it doesn’t seem that important. If she can spend some time in a cabin, surely she can make time to meet with Jerry’s

What I observed in the book of Shoeless Joe jerry would have never figure out how bad his life was before he met ray. Jerry would just stay at home all the time and stopped writing. Once Ray came into his life, he had a little bit of fun on this crazy adventure he went on. Jerry would have never found out about how much he loved baseball and found his passion again for writing. Jerry also helped Ray figure out some things. Jerry helped Ray realize how much more family is important to him by Jerry getting chosen to go with the players. Also Jerry helps ray control his jealousy by saying what you have is good and you need to be there for Karin and Annie. While Jerry gets to go because his family is all grown and they don't necessarily need him.…

Similarly, Jerry 's defiance also keeps him from selling the chocolates and defying authorities. First, when all of the strange things like prank phone calls and people outside his house happen to Jerry, his reactions are defiant. Jerry shows defiance because he feels that he does not need anyone 's help and can get all of the chocolate business out of the way himself with no one 's assistance. Second, when Jerry would say, " 'Because I don 't want to '" (163), whenever asked why he does not sell chocolates, Jerry shows his defiance by not telling anyone the reason why he does not sell the chocolates no matter what anyone tells him. Instead of giving everyone a real, straight answer, he would defy anyone who asked that question.…

“The End of Remembering” and “The Ordinary Devoted Mother” both focus on the concepts of self creation and the limits of oneself. “The End of Remembering” is a passage written by Joshua Foer regarding how technology has impaired the current generations thought process. Many people still believe that the reasoning for memory loss is because of our age, but in reality people tend to become forgetful because of the lack of exercise their brain endures. Foer uses oneself as a reference to how technology has shaped and limited people’s inner personalities from forming. In today's world, technology's role transitioned from being used for the primary reason to educate the public to the core filteration of our identities through social media.…

When she has no choice but to stay with her aunt by law, she learns that “blood ties do not necessarily nurture” (Makowsky 158). For example, when staying with her aunt Nadine, Ellen gets into an argument with her cousin on Christmas day and says something rude to her, “I told Dora….. If she ever had the sense to take a smart class she might know what I was talking about” (Gibbons 131). Her aunt Nadine walks into the argument and heard Ellen say this, without questioning what happened “She said for me to get out… that she didn’t want me to begin with” (Gibbons 131), and kicks her out on the streets. Being abandoned on Christmas day is not the only abuse Ellen goes through, she is also left with the responsibilities of an adult at the age of eleven. In the novel, Ellen is taken in her grandmother who hates her, and leaves her with huge responsibilities that no child should be left with. For example, Ellen’s grandmother gets very sick and Ellen has no choice but to take care of…
