Women’s rights and roles have been a controversial topic in history. In most of ancient cultures women did not have rights. They could not vote, they could not own anything. They ultimately belonged to a man; sometimes this man was her father or, when married, her husband. Women did not work, nor were they enrolled in an education plan, they simply did they were told to. However, a great improvement has been noticed throughout time. It can easily be told that women have started to do more and more for society. Their contribution for society and their help for the improvement of a country are greater every year. If we follow the path of history, women are continuously gaining more equality in society. And as there are many improvements in women’s roles in society, there are also many things that I believe affected women negatively. For instance, in the past decades, women’s dignity has been reduced enormously. Sure, now they have rights and roles, but I believe that society enormously reduced the meaning, if we could call it that, of women. For instance, pornography has reduced the importance of a woman’s role in society, by giving her the role of being a simple pleasure object. Women’s rights and roles in society have gotten bigger in the past 50 years, but, however, some roles have also been reduced.
In ancient cultures, men were extremely superior to women. You could see this in the roman culture, for instance. Where could only leave their home to do some simple activities, but weren’t allowed to work, nor to go to public festivities by herself. When referring to politics in ancient Rome, women did not have a voice; they were given the importance of an animal. Legally, she could not possess anything. A girl was dependent on her father, a married woman, to her husband, and a widow, to a tutor. She had that much of an insignificant role that she was assigned to a random tutor that would take possession of her husband’s belongings when he died.
