The role of women in the 1950s was oppressive and constrictive in many ways. Society placed high importance on men and many expectations on women. Women were supposed to fulfill certain roles, such as caring mother, a hardworking women and an obedient wife. The perfect mother was supposed to stay home and look after the family then only the society would accept them. In the past in our country Bhutan, people also think that if the family has girls then she have to take responsibilities at the young age. In 1950s there is only monastery education were only boys are allowed to study and girls they have to look after family. Parents typically fail to join girls for education because they want them to help at home. But they may also be concerned about their daughters’ security since the schools will usually be further away. Moreover, while parents are convinced of the value of education many believe that boys should get preference because girls will be ultimately looked after by their husbands. Therefore, girls should be able to take responsibilities of family at a young age. Likewise Tshomo tells her father to teach her read and write but he tells her that education is not for girls. Women’s household responsibilities and their relative’s lack of education have disadvantaged their opportunities for employment outside the home. Women’s labor force participation is considered lower than of men where women are employed, they tend to be working in low skilled and low paid jobs. Some of this take place under the appearance of the traditional form of courtship knows as ‘night hunting’ which involves a young man secretly entering the home of young women. In the past this has typically been by earlier arrangement and consensual a girl would not admit man she did not know and whom she and her parents did not accept as a potential partner though in some cases men would simply impose themselves on women.
