together after they were all fighting a Shell No campaign. Shell No was a huge campaign to go against it drilling into the arctic. So many activists showed up and went against the government, military, basically against everyone.
Zaina’s lecture had many great ideas and issues that were previously discussed between me and my classmates.
The most explicit connection was white supremacy or just whiteness. White people don’t understand their privileges that they have without even doing anything important to gain it. So much people wanted to resolve the white society for many decades already but nothing has changed. In everyday life everyone listens better to a white person than a colored because people have this stereotypical view that white people can solve any problems that are needed in order to have a better society. What no one sees is that many white people use their privilege to their advantage and say that they will do something but in the end still not do anything. People put their hope into the wrong people without even noticing. Colored folks tend to influence many issues because they start believing in what people tell them. For example, an African American male after a while starts to except that in the society they will get out down and called criminals no matter what they do, so they start to do criminal
things.
Privilege is basically power in my personal opinion, everyone has it even the smallest or poorest person on earth. Every person has their own way of using their power or not even knowing about it. Some people have more than others, mostly white males. It’s completely normal and natural for that to be the case because that has been around for many years. In a society, there are also classes that classify a person which connects with the power and privilege aspects. Historically thinking the lecture by Zarna Joshi connects to many decades of women of color suffrage not only against whites or males but also against white feminism.
The lecture gave me many thoughts and ideas about creating change in the society. People tend to follow other people in any situation, they are afraid of being unique and different. Change is an important aspect of the society that was n motion for many decades and occurs sometimes. Especially people in the younger age like me have a hard time showing and expressing difference and are scared to go against the society's stereotypes. The thoughts are about not being able to do anything because they are one person, young, or inexperienced in society. It’s hard to take risks and experience things out of someone's comfort zone. I am one of those people who is afraid to be different and create change because I think that no one will listen to me or even hear me out since I don’t have any experience or knowledge of life. I wish that I would be able to try to do something that would help the society become better as a whole but I have seen people not succeed and that scares me and many people too. I would love to experience some activist activities to gain more confidence and become a person who can do anything without thinking about what people would think of me. People who have the guts to stand up for their opinions are very honorable.
During the entire lecture, many thoughts and questions came to my mind. I became extremely frustrated and sad, hearing about the outcomes of campaigns and marches in order to create change. The outcomes were completely unbelievable, people got arrested, beaten, and cursed at. People tend to hate difference overall. If you are different from everyone else then you are weird. I had questions such as, What is wrong with our society not accepting change and difference? Why do people think it's okay to treat someone badly judging by the color of one’s skin? and the most scariest question would be related to death threats. Being an activist is a very important job that is in need for patience, honesty, and want for the change to occur. Why can’t people see beyond someone’s ethnicity or race? Is it that important? It is not only me who probably has these sort of questions.
