Women were still property of their husbands at the time in Louisiana and probably many other places. Louisiana was the most behind in the new culture of women's freedom, making Chopin's stories be thought of as unacceptable.“ She wrote about life and people in Louisiana and focused her attention on love, sex, marriage, women, and independance” (Sparknotes). Women's independence was obviously still a huge issue at the time, but Chopin being ahead of her time caused a great deal of controversy with her stories. Susan Cahill said “The story is ‘one of feminism’s sacred texts,” (Q&A). Calling it one Feminism’s sacred texts indicates that women actually thought about this story and took advantage of it. This story has helped bring out a ton of issues to women who didn't even know they had another option in life yet. Instead of writing an academic essay she decided to write fiction stories creating a real connection with the reader and the story. Chopin's writing portrayed so much feeling and understanding to women because they could empathise with the character and the story. Rather than an informational essay which helps more with learning about facts, which Chopin was not trying to point out, she was trying to get a problem in the world,
