Wonder By R. J. Palacio: Character Analysis

In Wonder by R. J. Palacio, August is a kid with facial birth defects. In the beginning of the story August said, “I won’t describe what I look like. Whatever you are thinking, it’s probably worse.” August lives with his parents, sister, and their dog, Daisy. His sister, Olivia, is going into her first year of high school. August is a normal ten year old kid on the inside but it can be almost impossible for people to look past his face and judge him by his personality. August goes to his first school when he is starting fifth grade. August has never gone to schools before because of all his surgeries on his body. At his first school, Beecher Prep, he meets these kids, Julian, Jack Will, and Charlotte, who are forced to be friends with him.
He is brave when his mom said, “I told him about all your surgeries, and how brave you are.” August’s mom said this when she was talking with her husband and August about going to school. August is also brave when he keeps trying to make friends even though it is hard for him. August is bullied at schools because of his face. His classmates makes a game called “The plague”, which is when someone touches August they have to wash their hands within three seconds or they get the plague. When August goes to school for the last day in his fifth grade year he takes a seat for the award ceremony “That where they give medals to the biggest brainiacs, Jack answered.” At the end August receives the Henry Ward Beecher award which goes to the students that achieve greatness. The award measures greatness by the right using of strength that a student caries in their heart. August goes from the “zombie” at the beginning of the school year to the most popular kid in the school after the award. His classmates also appreciate how he was able to deal with all the insults that he endured throughout the year. August has learned that if he is brave then he can get out of any
