For many people, language is not recognized as a form of communication, but as a barrier that limit them to connect with the world. This is a very common problem for people who immigrated to United State from other countries and who grew up under nonnative English-speaking family as a first-generation Asian American. In the article “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan, she tells her personal story of how she overcomes her own language obstacles. After I read this article, I have different feeling and opinions on the languages that I am speaking. I used to think that language is just a tool or form of communication that allow me to communicate with other people. Personally, I speak…

I did not know that much English since we had not had any English lessons in school in Vietnam. Because of that, I had a quite thick Vietnamese accent, . some Some of my classmates thought it was somewhat normal, but others started to make fun of me. At first, I did not care, but when they started to what I would call to bully me, I became quite irritated and sad. They started bullying me for everything: my accent, my stereotype and even how I looked. We tried everything we could, my family and I, but it did not…

For some language might be just something you speak to communicate but for others it defines who they are. Some may realize this from the start but others ponder on it after they lose that sense of belonging with their own. As we know, The United States of America, is a melting pot and with us we bring our own identity such as: language, culture, religion, and traditions. Losing any of these traits could results in losing who you are, as we read in, “Speaking In Tongues” by Zadie Smith and “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” by Gloria Anzaldùa.…

For example, in the essay “Mother Tongue” written by Amy Tan, point out that her mother didn’t speak perfect English, so people treat her differently. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her. When you don’t speak perfect English language people look down on you and treat you differently and unfairly. It's true how some people take advantage of her just because her English isn't perfect. Not knowing other’s language also can let people experience discrimination. I remember the first time that I experienced discrimination in American is on my first day of school. A few black students were sitting next to me and one black girl asked me to borrow lotion. At that time I didn’t know what’s that mean, so I asked her a stupid question: “what’s lotion mean?” After I asked this question they all laughed at me and some began to yell even. My face was flushed and swollen with embarrassment. Overall, language is a base thing for people to communicate and a good way to get…

I agree with Tran’s point of view because everyone that tends to learn English from difference countries speaks broken English because of their accents. Tran’s speaks on how she had to translate a lot for her mother because people wouldn’t take her mom serious because she didn’t speak proper English. People do tend to make fun of others English because they can pronounce certain words at it should be. I remember I had to do that for my grandmother who also spoke broken English and I hated when people made fun of the way she…

People that don’t speak the native language of a certain area are often discriminated based off their language which reflects their culture. Just by insulting their language, that is basically disparaging that person’s culture. Anzaldua expresses the linkage between ridiculing language and how it reflects badly on her culture by saying, “[s]o, if you want to really hurt me, talk badly about my language. Ethnic identity is twin skin to linguistic identity” (Anzaldua 2951). The previous quote shows that when you offend someone’s language, you are affronting them not only as an individual but also their culture. Another way that can change how a culture is perceived is by people making simple judgements of people not in that culture. In Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue”, she mentions since no one completely understands her mother, judgments are made about her which can lead to a negative view on her culture (Tan 292). It is quite noticeable that these small judgements of her language have a large affect on how she is viewed as an individual and as her culture as a whole. These small things including how judging individuals and groups of people based off of their language can change the way a culture is viewed. These small things eventually add up, which can cause bigger problems to arise that leads to discrimination within our…
