World of Art and Racism
My experience with the whole racism concept is timid being that I am from a continent where most people think that’s where black people belong. Dark skin, small heads, unique culture, thick forest and big wildlife. The racism concept does exist there but only in one part of the continent and the rest has no concern about color.
“The issue of race, of course, is not confined to the institutional arrangements of popular culture production. Since popular culture deals with the symbolic realm of social life, the images which it creates, represents, and disseminates contribute to the overall racial climate.” (626). This is what Michael Omi used in his essay In Living Color: Race And American Culture in order to justify what many people in America refer to as racism of the modern American society.
This can be clearly seen in the music and sports industry; whereas musicians and sportsmen are engaged in the physical part of the activity which involves all the hard work and whites on the other hand are engaged in the executive part making them earn respect for the goods of blacks. With these things common in societies, people see it in an angle of racism.
Although racism tends to deal with color solemnly, it can also be a byproduct of society’s marriage to nature. People are not born to choose to what color they belong. Its nature’s work. And your IQ is not determined by the color of skin but rather a result of how the society wants you to think.
Racism has ever been in the history of American society as mention by Omi, “Even prior to the inception of the republic, the United States was a society shaped by racial conflict.” (627).This is what makes it complicated to erase from the minds of people who suffered the most and once their minds reflects to the pain faced by their ancestors, anger is triggered and revenge is the only thing their mind can think of.
