2. God, Torah, and Israel are the three things that make Judaism a living religion. God is the creator of heaven and earth, shows us mercy and justice, and gave Moses the Torah. The Ten Commandments, word to humanity, and God’s will are expressed in the Torah. Children of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob who received the Torah from God on Mount Sinai are referred to as Israel. (World Religions in America, 125-126.) 3. Judaism lives in the home, synagogue, and on pilgrimages. In the home, Passover, liberation of slaves from Pharaoh’s bondage, rite of circumcision, marriage rite, and Hanukkah are a few activities that happen within the home. Public readings of the Torah, studying, community prayer, bar and bat mitzvah occur within the synagogue. A pilgrimage is any journey that is taken to pursue a religious quest. Segregationist Judaism follows the rules of the Jewish religion strictly. They do not deviate from the diet, live only with fellow Jews and purchase goods from Jews whereas integrationist Jews believe they can follow the Torah but also live their lives similar to society. Although there are variations among the same religion, there are few disagreements because each member recognizes and respects a fellow members choice and practice of religion. Such diversity within a religion suggests strength because it is accepting of the different people, beliefs, and shows the religion is open for all.
