World War I was one of the most influential events that mankind has ever seen. World War I was one of the first examples of a wartime economy that affected the way countries went through everyday life. As we see today, much of the overseas war has little to no effect on how America functions as a country, whereas in 1914-1918, America was forced into becoming a full-blown war machine. World War I affected more than just the counties the war was being fought in. The war changed how homeland America functioned medically, economically, and politically.
World War I was a war that America was originally not planned on being apart of. Woodrow Wilson (the president at the time) held a foreign policy that aligned very strongly with isolationism. America was a strong country that stayed mostly to itself until later towards the middle of the 1900’s (Macmillan). Consumer America went on pause for nearly 5 years because every factory was converted to a war factory for tanks, planes, arms, ammunition, and many other war accessories. Tanks were actually a innovation because of World War I. Trench warfare was used vastly in WWI which led to a stalemate type of battles. It was very difficult to advance and gain land because crossing “no-man’s land” was nearly impossible without some sort of protection.
