Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I am here today to encourage my peers and to also challenge my peers. The message I have focused on today is critical for the future is standing up for what is right. The future of humanity depends on our ability to speak and stand up for what we believe in and our values. We must use the youth to help this work and make this society a much more supportive and understanding society to live in. Today, I will discuss three texts that deal with the issue “Standing up for what is right”. These texts are: “WorldShaker” written by Richard Harland, Bob Marley’s song “Get Up, Stand Up” and the song “Caught in the Crowd” written by Kate Miller-Heidke. They will be broken down into detail.
The book “WorldShaker” by Richard Harland is set in a mobile city, on the upper decks of which lives a boy by the name of Col. As Col was next in line for the role of Supreme Commander, he had fallen in love with a filthy ‘Riff’ who had escaped from below. This book revolves around love and giving the filthies the rights that human kind deserve. Standing up for what is right, plays a massive role within the book as it’s all about the lead up to the beginning of treating filthies like human beings. Filthies in the book were known as slaves, animals and are not even recognised as humans. An example of this issue is when Col ran to the queen, risking his position and being a part of his family to tell her along with the help of Professor Twillip and Septimus saying “We have researched the historical origins of the Filthies and can prove they’re exactly the same as us”. By this being said in the book, it tells us that they believe that coming forward and standing up for the Filthies was the correct thing to do. This text represents the issue positively because its show how everyone on the juggernaut came to their sense and stood up for the filthies. This is very important to the youth
