Would You Answer Honestly If Particiapting in Anational Crime Survey
1. Would you answer honestly if participating in a national crime survey asking about your criminal behavior, including drinking and drug use? 2. Why or Why not? 3. Explain how honestly and dishonest impact self –report studies.

Yes I would answer honestly. The reason I say answer honestly is because it would help in the data profiles, and to make sure that there results are correct, so there will not be any confusion in the data when criminologist go to profile criminals. If false information is given on a survey then the data will not be accurate and when criminologist go to use the data to profile a criminal it will not be correct. When the information is given on a survey data will be entered correctly and when time to profile a criminal it will be accurate and more affective.
As long as you are honest on a survey there results come out correct and can change data so that criminologists can create better profiles when profiling criminals. Also it will help criminologist figure out why a person commit a crime, and how they may be able to stop people From committing crimes.
Self-report study is a method of measuring crime involving the distribution of a detailed questionnaire to a sample of people asking them whether they have committed a crime on a particular period of time. Self-report study has been a good method for criminologists to determine the social characteristics of offenders. Self-report studies involve confidential questionnaires that invite the respondents to record voluntarily whether or not they have committed any of the listed offenders.

I will be surveying 500 students. 250 alternative high school students and 250 charter high school students, between the ages of 18-19, because it would be easier for them to participate in this design without parental control. I will be specifically doing this research in the Lawndale area, on the west side of Chicago. Personally me growing up in Chicago I have knowledge about this area, because this is where there are single-family households, low income, and lots of crime take place here. I have two purposes for using surveys. The first purpose is to get the public opinions (students) on dealing with poverty crime to help improve some of the difficult defects that exist within those main areas. Another reason why I chose surveys is so that I can reach out to different high schools, where I can get the younger population educated on, crime and how not to let it affect them. Also, there were three different surveys that I had to choose for my research proposal, which were questionnaires, mailed surveys, and telephone surveys. I decided to use questionnaires. I will be asking a series of questions related to both property crimes and serious violent crimes they had committed in the past year. First, students were asked 3 questions related to property crimes. “In the past year, how many times did you want to steal something for your local mall”? 0 = never, 1 = 1-2 times, 2 = 3-4 times, and 3 = 5 or…

The Official Government Statistics are accumulated from police and count records; these include convictions, cautions and Crown prosecution service. Whereas, the British crime survey is a victim study which takes place every year. It shows a representative sample of over 16s living in private residents in England and Wales. It is untaken by face to face interviews where respondents are asked about their experiences with crime incidents in the last 12 months. In 2004/5 over 45,000 people took part in the survey. It helps to identify those people most at risk of different types of crime which helps them to plan prevention programmes. The British Crime survey looks at people’s attitude toward crime and the Criminal Justice system. Self report studies ask people if they have committed a series of offences over a period time, which they haven’t got caught or haven’t reported to the police. Most people don’t know that they have committed a crime or even know the penalties for the crimes which they have done. For example, using the company phone to make a personal call can result in £5,000 or 6 months on prison.…

There are various ways to collect research data for specific crimes. Although there is no way to get an accurate statistic for crime research data, there are five main strategies to obtain the data which are: surveys, case studies, participant observations, self-reporting, and secondary analysis. For example, if I were to try to gather data on rapists, the data gathering strategies that I would use that would maybe be most helpful in gathering the closest accurate data would be case studies and secondary analysis only because the rapist wouldn’t openly admit raping anyone in a survey, and women who feel like they were raped because of their own perception would make an inaccurate statement. The reason why a case study would work is because a rapist case needs close attention to detail and that is what a case study is- an in depth investigation. And a secondary analysis could possibly catch anything that the case study could have possibly missed. If I were trying to get the data for theft rates in an area, the data gathering strategies that I would use would be the surveys and the secondary analysis. If I was trying to gather data to see the how often rape happens in women or men’s jails, the data gathering technique that I would use would be participant observations because this method involves a participant going undercover and collecting the data personally which makes it a lot more accurate and specific. The participant would go into the jail and see for themselves what is going on and would report back what they…

Survey research is the process of interviewing participants or administering questionnaires and written surveys to a large number of people. (CliffsNotes). The data is then studied to determine trends, differences and similarities. Predications are then made about the participants. The advantage to survey research is inexpensive data acquisition, convenience to participants schedule and larger volume of participant information. However, it does include disadvantages as well. There can be volunteer or interviewer bias and distortion. “Distortion occurs when a subject does not respond to questions honestly”. (CliffNotes). Volunteer bias is not having…

Many people now turn to victim Surveys such as the British Crime Survey (BCS) as more reliable sources of information. Victim Surveys are so called because they ask a sample of the population what crimes they have been a victim in the previous 12 months. This increases validity as they include all crimes that people have been a victim of, regardless of whether or not they reported the crime to the police. A number of crimes are not covered by the survey. These include…

Criminal Profiling has been made a desired profession by the popular TV shows such as Law and Order and Criminal Minds, but in reality, criminal profiling has been a source for Law Enforcement since the early 1100s. The first documented use of criminal profiling was the demonization of Jews, better known as “Blood Libel”. These accusations are still used against Jews today, unfortunately. Criminal Profiling was also used in the Salem Witch Trials to decide who could be classified as Witches and the Spanish Inquisition in order to identify Muslims. The tactics and knowledge base that was used almost one thousand years ago, is still used today and will continue to be the basis of Criminal Profiling for many years to come.…
