Write A Term Paper On Tinnitus
Tinnitus referred as ears ringing, in humans, can be caused by a variety of factors; such as high-level sound exposure, ototoxic drugs, and hearing loss. It is basically the self perception of sound in the absence of acoustic stimulation. the sound waves hit the outer ear and converge into the ear drum. The vibrations at ear drum are transferred into the inner rear through the middle ear. Once the sound waves reach inner ear, they travel through the cochlea towards the organ of corti. Further the signals on the hair cells on the organ of corti follows to the brain stem. Now, the signal travel to mesephelon and then into the auditory cortex. Tinnitus can be classified into two types: Objective and Subjective. Objective sound or somatosound is developed through an internal acoustic source activating the cochlea by air or bone conduction. …show more content…
Chronic tinnitus is normally more common in men. It is figured elderly people tend to suffer from tinnitus. A study of tinnitus shows that odds of having tinnitus increases as hearing threshold levels at 4.0 KHz increase. Tinnitus can be treated through the audiological techniques or psychological or medical. Audiological techniques include, use of hearing aids, Masking, Residual inhibition, Habituation, Environmental (palliative) and Tran cranial Magnetic Stimulation. Now, medical technique include surgical excision. A benign intracranial hypertension, vascular pulsations, glomus jugular tumors, palatal myoclonus, auditory nerve transection, grid placement cortical electrical stimulation over auditory cortex, and vagus nerve stimulation paired with tones. A research study was conducted on electrically stimulating the auditory nerve by operating on

The first step would be the stimulation whether it be air noises, water noises, music or someone coughing. The sound then travel to the outer ear where it is the reflected into the middle ear where it is amplified into the inner ear. The sound is then transferred through the viscous fluid in the cochlea. Inside the cochlea are tubes that are filled with fluid and hair cells. The hair cells are moved by the sound waves and become receptors for the primary auditory cortex. The cortex then processes the sounds into an interpretation. (University of Phoenix,…

Tinnitus can be prevented by best by avoiding exposure to loud noises completely, however this can prove difficult in a lot of scenarios. A more realistic approach to preventing tinnitus include reducing the time that you are exposed to loud noises, this can be done by either spending less time in noisy environments, or by taking regular breaks about every half hour for ten minutes or so. Another way to reduce the risk of getting tinnitus is by ensuring that you stay hydrated, as this makes sure that the circulation for the blood in the inner ear is kept ‘topped up’.…

Sound vibrations from the buzzing bee vibrate the air molecules as pressure waves around my ear and enter the auricle which is cone-shaped in order to direct these sound waves into the ear via the external acoustic meatus. The sound waves reach the tympanic membrane through the external acoustic meatus and cause it to vibrate. When the tympanic membrane moves, it causes the auditory ossicles to move. The auditory ossicles are made up of the malleus, incus, and stapes. These ossicles are important…

However, there is a large coincidence rate between tinnitus and hyperacusis. “ Among patients attending tinnitus clinics with a primary complaint of tinnitus the prevalence of hyperacusis is about 40% and in patients with a primary compliant of hyperacusis the prevalence of tinnitus has ben reported as 86%,” (Baguley 2003). These coincidence rates leads researchers to believe that there is a common mechanism linking the two disorders. Now, there are two instruments that can aid in quantifying the handicap of hyperacusis. Both instruments are questionnaires. The first questionnaire indicated three factors that caused variance. These three are attentional, social and emotional. The second questionnaire examined that more than half of their variance were de to cognitive reactions, somatic behavior and emotional factors. The second questionnaire that is only available in German has shown to be sensitive to treatments. Another issue with studying hyperacusis is that there is no underlying medical condition that can be found. Hyperacusis is most commonly reported as a symptom of a condition. One commonality of the conditions where hyperacusis has been reported as a symptom, the conditions involve facial nerve dysfunction. “ Since the…

The global neurostimulation devices market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 14.3% from 2013 to 2020 on account of future growth opportunities such as the presence of untapped markets in rapidly growing Asian and Latin American economies and the growing number of externally funded clinical programs working towards the development of new products (e.g. the National Institute for Health Research funded a research program initiated by the NIHR/Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Unit to develop neuromodulation devices for the treatment of tinnitus).…
