with it and have no charges against them. There was this little 12 year old boy, his name is Tamir Rice. He was playing at the park and he had a fake play gun, and within two seconds of the police showing up they shot him, according to the surveillance camera. While the 911 caller mentioned that the gun could be fake and that the individual may be a 20 year old juvenile, which that information was not comprehended that well or at all by the officer (Keneally). Since the caller said “it could be fake”. They didn’t even put that into consideration since the child was laying there for four minutes while he could’ve been on his way to the hospital. Then by the time he got to the hospital he died of failure of his organs. In today’s society if you hear the word black man and gun in the same sentence that black man gets no chance to do anything, any move or step towards anything will get them shot or hurt automatically no matter the age. Even though in the 1960’s there were worse police brutality anywhere there was a black person walking around it was much more worse then, than it is in today's world, but it still happens today. In the 1960’s there’s a white person and there is a black person. There is no in between. Depending on your race that’s how police officers treat you. For example the way the police officers treated the members of the Black Panther party. They were doing anything but protecting them and keeping them safe. The Black Panther party was founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, for self-defense. On April 25, 1967 the party marches on California state capital fully armed. Bobby Seale reads the protest and police immediately arrest 30 armed panthers (Baggins). Why arrest them if they aren’t doing anything worth arresting them for. It’s a racist stereotypical thing for the officers to arrest them and be worried about them hurting or being a threat to other people. They assume there is danger when all The Black Panther party is doing is protecting themselves and standing up for themselves. Nowadays people just chose to not talk about how bad racism was, and how similar things are happening now in today’s lifestyle.
When comparing both of the similar actions happening in the 1960’s and today you could say that is rarely changed. Police officer hearing a phone call and automatically assuming its trouble since the call in was about a black man. They think that it’s a threat to other people but it really isn’t. These are just examples of what’s happening and not changing. It’s an example of how things are staying the same and not changing even though it’s wrong. These two examples of racial attitudes towards black people are almost exactly the same. Some police officers still have the same attitudes towards black people today as in the 1960’s. Since these events really haven’t changed that much about police brutality. Everyone should make an effort to change from the past and not have similar things happening in the past happen today. That’s why we learn history, so we don’t repeat what happened in the
past. All the negative things that occurred in the 1960 are led to great things happening in the present day. Compared to the past nobody would every think that there would ever be a black president in the white house. If it wasn’t for the new and improved laws and equality standards towards all the races then things like a black president wouldn’t happen. These days black people can be role models, famous actors or actress, or professional athletes. They don’t have to worry about some racial comment at their work place. Black people can go about things more freely and have more opportunities for greatness, then in the 1960’s. President Obama is a perfect example of how far black people have come. Why be treated differently when all everyone is trying to do is be successful. Most of us look up to President Obama and how he handles things. He does what he does and doesn’t let anyone’s opinion affect what he does. He is the leader of the United States. Back in the 1960’s black people couldn’t even get a drink of water from the same drinking fountain, but now it’s a different world which is great. At least in today’s world black people are more accepted and thought of as actual people instead of a pile of dirt in the desert. Complete opposite of present day there was a whole bunch of separate everything. Separate things for black and white people. There was the Jim Crow laws which doesn’t exist today but did in the 1960’s. The Jim Crow laws were state and local laws enforcing racial segregation in the southern United States. Railways and streetcars, public waiting rooms, restaurants, boardinghouses, theaters, and pubic parks were segregated; separate school, hospitals, and other public institutions, were designated for blacks (See C.V). A march on Washington by over 200,000 in 1963 dramatized the movement to end Jim Crow. Southern whites often responded with violence, and federal troops were needed to preserve order and protect blacks (See. C. V). To be seen as a worthless human being would be horrible. Making different designated areas for black people is just a waste of time. Todays United States would not be the best place to live if the Jim Crow laws were still in action today. Even though there are ups and down of racism towards black people it seems to be getting better with individuals pursuing a goal that most likely would not have happened in the 1960’s. To become president of the United States that’s a huge accomplishment towards the black community and to the rest of the U.S who was against racism. From being treated like dirt from sitting in the back of the bus to being able to sit anywhere that you want to. Black people are individual to and behind the skin color everyone has the same muscles, and bones in your body, and skin color shouldn’t change the way people or treated. Now there are attempts for differences and changes to be made to make things better. There are people who are actually starting to realize that we all are the same inside out no matter the skin color. The things that were going on in the 1960’s are unbelievable to believe happened. Even to find some racism in little corners of the road along the way. Attitudes of race towards black people were extremely negative, and still can be. Even though the Jim Crow laws were in action and police officers are still criticizing and not being cooperative about things. The U.S thought on race has changed in ways. This day and age it doesn’t matter your race in how successful you are going to be. It doesn’t matter your race for a school or restaurant that you can go to. There are changes every day and that’s what makes the attitude of race of a black individual different. That’s what makes everyone accept anyone in the end “laundry is the only thing that should be separated by color”.
