George Martin
George Henry Martin, sometimes known as “the fifth Beatle” was born January 3, 1926 in London, England. His interest in music started early, at the age of six when his family bought their first piano and he started taking lessons. However, he only went to eight lessons due to disagreements between the piano teacher and his mother. In 1943 at the age of 17, Martin enlisted in the Royal Navy and served until 1947.
After leaving the Navy, George Martin went on to study piano and oboe at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and thus began his career in the music industry. After school, he began working at BBC in the classical music department, and in 1950, went to EMI Records, where he worked for their Parlophone label. Martin’s primary focus there was on novelty records and comedy, but he also recorded cabaret music, jazz, Scottish dance music, and ballad singers such as Judy Garland. However, he became interested in bringing rock & roll to Parlophone. A friend of his told him about Brian Epstein, the manager of The Beatles. Sir George Martin is important to this industry because he gave The Beatles a chance. He gave the band that changed the face of music a chance, even though several other companies had already turned them down. I don’t know a single person today who doesn’t own at least one song produced by Sir George Martin. I myself, own at least one hundred of them because I am a huge Beatles fan. Without the help of Sir George Martin, music would not be where it is
