Venus, the second planet from the Sun, is a solid and rocky terrestrial planet. Named by the Romans, it is the third brightest thing in the night sky after the Sun and the Moon and is often called the Morning or Evening Star because these are the times it shines the brightest. The atmosphere of Venus is mostly made of CO2 and sulphuric acid. The surface can be very hard to see because of the thick atmosphere; the pressure on Venus is 92 times stronger than the pressure on Earth. The climate is very unpleasant - …show more content…
the surface can reach 800 degrees Fahrenheit. Before the 1960s, scientists believed that Venus had a similar climate to ours because of the clouds; however, after microwave observations, it was shown that the surface is too hot for liquid water to exist.
Earth has seven or eight 'major' tectonic plates - African, Antarctic, Eurasian, North American, South American, Pacific, and Indo-Australian. The last one is sometimes divided into the Indian and Australian plates; there are also many smaller plates. There are three main types of plate boundaries. The first is the transform boundary, or the Constructive boundary which is where two plates slide along beside each other and no plates are created or destroyed. Earthquakes can occur on these faults, such as the one in San Andreas. The second is the Divergent boundary (or the Constructive) where two plates slide away from each other. This produces many small volcanoes and earthquakes. The third is the Convergent or Destructive boundary where two plates slide towards each other and either a subduction zone (where one plate slides beneath the other) or a continental collision occur.
Mars, named for the Roman God of war because of its blood red colour, has two moons named Phobos meaning Fear and Deimos meaning Panic.
These two moons are heavily cratered and misshapen. Phobos and Deimos are known in Greek mythology as the offspring of Ares and Aphrodite. They were discovered in 1877 by American Asaph Hall. Phobos is larger, 28km long and 20km wide. It has a 10km crater called Stickney. This was Hall's wife's last name - his wife encouraged Asaph to continue with his studies, leading to this particular discovery. Deimos is 16km long and 10km wide. Its largest crater is 2.6km in diameter. Their density is 2000kg per square meter. Phobos is predicted to hit the surface of Mars in a few million
years.
