Directions: You will write a 5 paragraph essay about the book, The Outsiders. Below is paragraph development information to help you. Feel free to adjust the requirements and add something that you would like to share.

• Simile/Metaphor
• Transition Words
Paragraph 1 - Introduce the book by writing the title and author. Write a brief introduction to the book. Provide descriptions of the setting. What is the author’s purpose for writing this book? What is/are the main theme(s)?
Paragraph 2 - Describe the main characters, the gangs, and the point of view (who is telling the story). What is the mood or tone?
Paragraph 3 - Give a concise plot summary. Along with the sequence or major events, you may want to discuss the book’s climax and resolution, and other literary devices such as foreshadowing. Use references from the book. Be careful NOT to give away important plot details or the ending.
Paragraph 4 - What is your personal opinion about the book? Did the author achieve his purpose? Is the writing effective, powerful, difficult, and beautiful? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the book? What is your overall response to the book? Did you find it interesting, moving, dull, funny, and disturbing? What makes it believable?
Paragraph 5 - Conclude by pulling your thoughts together. You may want to say what impression the book left you with, or emphasize what you want your reader to know about it. Would you recommend it to others? Explain your answer.
