Throughout high school, English was never my favorite subject. It seemed bland and dull to me and I thought that whatever career I chose would have more to do with mathematics and sciences. So when I enlisted into the U.S. Army and eventually achieved the rank of Sergeant, I discovered that writing was one of the most important factors of my everyday life. Now there are many different forms and memorandums that write on a weekly basis, but if I had to choose one that stands out above all others, it would be the DA Form 4856. It is otherwise known as the Developmental Counseling Form, which is without a doubt the most important writing assignment I complete every month. The Developmental Counseling Form is used for a variety of reasons. The most common use of it in my case would be to evaluate my soldiers’ performance at the end of every month. A lot of planning and thinking goes into it because I have to take into consideration that whatever I decide to write would ultimately have an effect on my soldiers’ careers. Therefore, before I begin to write the evaluation, I must take notes throughout the month of how well my soldiers are performing their everyday duties. Being proactive and doing the right thing would result in a well written evaluation for them, while being late to work or having to be reprimanded for misconduct would instead reflect a poor evaluation. A variety of areas are covered in the evaluation, including not only work performance, but physical fitness as well as overall discipline. I always try to ensure that my soldier’s receive the best evaluation possible, but I also have to ensure I am being fair at the same time. Precision is vital when evaluating because I need to make each evaluation relate to that one person instead of just writing a universal version that other Sergeants tend to do.
