LOVE IS A FALLACY

Summary
This short story is about two roommates, who need each other. One favors materialistic objects, and wishes he had a raccoon coat, and the other favors looks, and beauty, and wishes he had a certain girl to go steady with. The main character studying at a law school, cant help but think about who his wife will be one day, hoping it will be Polly Espy. Polly Espy is well known by his roommate, and after bribing him with the raccoon coat he asked to take Polly on a date. Polly doesn’t have that much intelligence so he makes it his mission to teach her a few lessons. After going on five dates, and asking her to go steady with him, Polly denies him by using all the knowledge he had taught her. At first he laughed at it, until she mentioned that the reason why they couldn’t go steady was, because she promised his roommate Petey, she would with him. The story ends by him asking Polly to explain why she should go steady with Petey, and her reply was, “He’s got a raccoon coat.” Since the story did ended on this note. We can’t help but to make our own conclusion.
I believe after this, he was feeling hurt, and betrayed by his roommate. He had made Petey a deal, and that deal was to exchange the raccoon coat , for Polly. In the end Petey ended up winning, because he got both Polly, and the raccoon coat. Although it wasn’t a competition between them, Petey betrayed him, by not following through with their deal. This story teaches us the lesson about materialistic objects, and true friendship. It shows that some people would risk certain things in their life, for an object.

Love has always been and interesting topic to me because it seems to have no limitations; desired by many, and disregarded by some. Have you ever heard the expression ‘’Love is a universal language’’? What does this really mean? People around the world use the word “love” to express themselves in many forms and fashions. Articulated here by Harriet Sun, in her article College Sex & Love: What is true love? Harriet exemplifies simple common uses of the word: “Love. It 's a commonly thrown around four-letter word. "I love macaroni and cheese." "I love Vanilla Ice." (Remember that?) Sometimes, even an "I love him" or "I love her."”[1] We all have our own ideas as to what love means to us, but this is usually based upon our own personal experiences and emotions, not factual evidence. I wanted to further investigate as to what the “real meaning” of love is and how it effects people particular relationships. Is love just a four-letter word used all too freely? Is love some abstract emotion or feeling; or is love ore simplistic?…

Within the works of William Shakespeare’s Othello, Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein the concept of love is found within characters that are innocent and filled with good intentions. In all three works, love fills specified characters with joy and gratefulness towards the other characters who they claim to love. Unfortunately, the characters that experience love are only satisfied with its graces until it somehow gets corrupted. The minds of the victimized characters are filled with anger, hatred, and some with the idea of vengeance. Corruption of love within Othello, Dracula, and Frankenstein come with causes and effects. In the two works Frankenstein and Othello, both Frankenstein’s creation and Othello were in love. The creature was in love with the cottagers and Othello was in love with Desdemona. When being presented with evidence to no longer feel love towards the people they claim to admire- it causes them to hate. The corruption in the relationships of Jonathan Harker from Dracula and Victor Frankenstein from the novel Frankenstein is primarily caused by the supernatural beings working against them. Frankenstein’s love (Elizabeth) is murdered by the beast he creates, and Jonathan’s love (Mina) was corrupted when she is bitten by Dracula. The effect of love being corrupted in the works Frankenstein and Dracula results with the characters to seek revenge and to stop Frankenstein’s creature and Dracula from causing more pain to humanity. As a result of the characters Othello and the monster created by Frankenstein having their love corrupted, they murder the people who they see as the motivation for all of their actions. Once these characters come to a realization of their mistakes, it is too late and they commit suicide. Thus the works of William Shakespeare’s Othello, Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein all…

As the Smith-Garcias are planning for their baby, they have to decide which principles from each of the theories they have researched that they will practice. The first of these theories is Skinner’s Operant Conditioning in which an element of reinforcement and punishment is utilized to shape the child’s social and behavioral skills. It will be the parent’s job to reinforce wanted behavior and punish unwanted behavior. For example, if the child throws a temper tantrum, her parents might put her in time out to show that this type of behavior is not acceptable. The punishment therefore reinforces that if she acts this way again, she knows she will be placed in time out. Essentially the child learns from these reinforcements and punishments. The second principle is Bandura’s social learning theory which deals with vicarious reinforcement and vicarious punishment. Essentially the child will learn by observing others and is not affected directly. Bandura believed that direct reinforcement could not account for all types of learning which explains why his theory is rooted in the idea of observation. Overall There are three core concepts at the heart of social learning theory. First is the idea that people can learn through observation. Next is the idea that internal mental states are an essential part of this process. Finally, this theory recognizes that just because something has been learned, it does not mean that it will result in a change in behavior. To illustrate Bandura’s theory in their parenting style, the Smith-Garcia’s might provide a model for sharing or even increase sharing through vicarious reinforcement.…

It is hard to consider people who neglect to act in the face of extreme cruelty, especially those who witnessed the events of the Holocaust without intervening, as average humans. However, recent sociological experiments have revealed that most people will witness an emergency without intervening due to altruistic inertia or pluralistic ignorance. In the case of genocide, dehumanization is crucial to the ability of ordinary people to commit or observe unspeakable acts of violence against another. Genocides such as the Holocaust occur due to the nature of most people to be bystanders and the ability of the perpetrators to depict their victims as subhuman.…

“For those I love I will sacrifice” is a quote by - ("Cite it somewhere"). Many people in life come upon the problem of thinking they found love, but actually lose another love in the process. Willa Cather employs this situation as she uses the character Aunt Georgiana to illustrate how Georgiana must do this while pursuing the love of a man in her famous short story “A Wagner Matinée.” On top of Aunt Georgiana losing love, Cather implements the facts of the hard life people on the frontier have to live. Aunt Georgiana gives up her true love of music for the upstart love of a man to only later realize what great sacrifice she has made.…

Love is a simple phrase that has existed throughout human history. Since the beginning of time, we have been taught to love one another through works of kindness and compassion. Despite this, we as a greedy, shallow culture tend to resort to conflict to solve our issues. From wars to segregation, humans have fought numerous battles in the name of a better world, yet, all they have accomplished is insurmountable conflict. Although this epidemic floods our history, there are times where the tenderness of people has broken through and achieved substantial gains for the world populous. To name a few: Jesus was crucified as a perfect, loving lamb in order to cleanse the grime of sin, Martin Luther King Jr. was praised for rooting his arguments in…

Love – the language of the world. Everyone feels love at least once in their lifetime and yet it is something that can’t be explained rationally; it can only be accepted. Love is like ocean waves; being calm and serene at a moment, and without warning becoming violent. Love has no formal meaning because everyone experiences it differently, what one person thinks is love, another may think is infatuation or vice versa. In the end, obtaining love seems to be the main underlying aspiration that we all strive for in our lifetimes. It is the one thing that we undauntedly all, as humans, have in common.…

I believe that love is more than just a word, I believe that love is what makes the world go round and is the driving force behind everything, I believe that love is the thing that can make any human happy, but at the same time can be the source of their insanity. One thing i've been trying to figure out is what drives a person to be sad or happy? I've always thought happiness is what you make it out to be, and is different for every single person, but one thing i'm almost positive about, is that we all find happiness in love. Ever since I was a kid, i've always thought that getting married to the person of your dreams was the ultimate life goal, and to me, still is the ultimate life goal. Recently i've met a girl, she's the most amazing woman i've ever met, and ever will meet. She is…
