To do this the performers must get into character this can be by changing their voice to show the emotions of a character or by simply looking the part this is where a costume comes into play. Costumes are one of the most important parts of a play; they make the audience feel comforted by the characters. Like a soldier who has been in a war they aren’t going to have a clean face they need scars and to be dirty otherwise people think that it is unrealistic and that they aren’t in character. In my position as a sentry he should look dirty and should be tired but weary. Where as a colonel should look a bit more formal but in times of war they should lose this and become cunning and deceitful. I think that my costume does this, as the hat I am to wear is more of a commando hat, making it for stealth more then combat. As Boyle his look should be respectable as he is a teacher so he should be in a casual suit, again he should be more formal than other characters, such as Lynda. This is why I have chosen a casual dress shirt and school pants.
In a play you must also make the props look realistic. Making them look from the time is meant to take place and what country it is from I think that the tea cups we have are extremely good for this as it is in Britain they look British. This allows the audience to see what country we are meant to be in as they know tea is a very British thing. Also the guns we have are a lot older then what the play is set in but it allows us to show that most were not prepared for war they didn’t poses
