My family aboard the boat began to worry for one another safety. We were now in a life-threatening storm on the midst of a furious river. I observed the innocence of a child in my niece as the depressing look of fear surrounded her shivering, cold, wet body. Yet, she remained hopeful and prayed to God for eternal life in Heaven. We cried out desperate prayers while the raging storm pounded our pontoon boat like a boxing match. My grandfather maintained the courage and strength and proceeded to steer the boat in the horrific scene.…
To him? To me?’. I couldn’t get it through my head that something good has to come out of this, there just has to. So I have put everything, my suffering and my doubts, into the Lord’s hands so that I can go on and be with my dad for these last few steps to the top of his staircase we call…
I was listening to Party in the U.S.A by Miley Cyrus, a weird and strong effort to look at the bright side of this new life; it worked because the song always makes me want to dance and that day wasn’t an exception. I remember coming out of the plane and thinking “God, it smells so good. It smells like someone just cleaned everything.” Then I saw a cleaning lady and I knew I was right. When we walked out of the airport, I noticed it was a cloudy day but it was really hot, it’s one of those moments where you don’t know if you should take your jacket off or not. My cousin picked us up and her excitement was contagious, for the first time in that day, I smiled. She took us to Fuddruckers, we ate and talked a lot, it brought many memories from when my mom, my sister, and I used to come to Miami to visit and we would eat there sometimes. I liked it there because of all the photos of artist that I like, so that cheered me up too. That night, at my uncle’s house, before going to sleep my mom said “Thank you God, because we’re okay.” And I took her hand and said “Amen.” While she was sleeping, I prayed all night until I fell asleep. I prayed for my sister, I prayed for my mom, I prayed for my dad, I prayed for my friends, and I prayed that my life here was good. God only knows how much I prayed for my life to be good…
One extremely important activity outside of the classroom that has helped me grow as an individual is Church League basketball at my local YMCA. From the outside looking in this league seems to be a form of glorified pick-up basketball with referees and a scoreboard but there is so much more to it. Almost half way through my junior year my father convinced me to try out for the varsity basketball team at school in November to which I hesitated at first but later gave in and tried out only to be cut. At first I was upset because I had never been cut from a team and I was unsure of how to handle it and what to do with my free time. This prompted me to reach out to God and ask him for a sense of direction and purpose in this time of my life to which He responded with a friend inviting me to Church League basketball. Once I experienced a few scrimmages and practices I decided to commit to playing Church League and coming to all of the…

Several times when I have struggled through the obstacles in my life, I prayed and God helped me through them. I was stuck in a situation a year back and God helped mw choose the right one. I got my financial aid money and after getting what I needed. I had money left over. It was to either spend it on stuff I really did not need or help my grandmother out with her finances. God helped me make the right decision and help my grandmother. As a younger woman I was always in the streets, and always going out. One particular night something kept telling me not to go and hang out with my friends. Well my friend called to ask if I was ready she would be on her way. I told her I was not going; I just decided to stay home. At about 130am my phone rang, she called to tell me one of our friends was shot and killed. I had the instinct of something bad happening, so I did not…
I remember this one time when I was watching television with my brother and we both saw an advertisement about some new lamp that it can light the whole room with just two little light bulbs. We were both laughing at the ads because it was a very stupid idea that they had came out with. In addition, none of us needed a new lamp because we have plenty of them in our house. A few day later, I saw my brother walk in the house carrying the same lamp that we both saw from that advertising commercial. Then I asked him why he had bought it because…
In the year of 2008 my dad was diagnosed with cancer of his thyroid. My whole family was devastated. It was then when I began to recollect everything I had learned from my faith in god. I prayed that my dad would be recover and live to see his grandchildren. All I know is that my dad did recover and went through his treatments the cancer was gone. I know that through my faith and prayers it helped me be a stronger person and make it through his difficult time period in my…
But I locked myself in my parents room because the ruckus out in the living was too much for me. It was already past 8 o'clock and I already knew that they weren't going to be leaving anytime soon. So I decided to fill my ears with some encouraging Christian music and my eyes with a book called 5 Minutes with Jesus. Just as I finished reading a chapter of the book I saw my dad coming into the room, and in the hallway I heard some mutter, "Grandpa just pasted away..." I walked to my dad and hugged him as he cried and uttered some words I couldn't get into my head. I let go of him and walked back into empty, frigid, starless room. I closed the door shut and didn't even bother to turn on the lights as I fell on my knees and cried endless prayers. Eventually I came out of the room sluggishly to look at my grandfather, and there I heard cries…
My dad grew up with his grandmother for the first 11 years of his life. You guys are probably wondering why… It wasn’t because his parents died, or they didn’t like him. When he was born his grandmother wanted their first grand child to live with her. His parents did see him on the weekends still, but his grandmother was the biggest mother figure in his life until 10. At 10 he moved to his parents house. That same year they decided to move to the United States of America, that is where his whole life changed. He was know longer in a small city where everyone knew each other. His parents had started a limo company in Dallas when they moved. He had to make all new friends. The hardest part for him was learning to speak English and just picking everything up and moving, but in the long run it paid off. Over the years my dad has taught me that it is our responsibility to help the less fortunate. Every year my dad donates millions of dollars to the less fortunate. This has taught me that if god has gave you a good life maybe you should help other people also. For example, one time it was in the middle of the night at I was with my dad and someone’s car had broken down on the highway he got out and helped the family change their tire.…

I saw my uncle play a soccer game for the first time and I really enjoyed it because he would have the mostly the whole time. I always felt like my uncle like my uncle was the best soccer player out of the whole team. One day afternoon my uncle told me that their soccer team made it to the playoffs. I was so excited and I was ready to go to the soccer game. I got to the soccer game and all the benches were full, there was no more seats to sit on, so I sat on the grass. After a long 90 minute game my uncle’s team had won in first place, but before the game started my uncle was in despair moment about winning the game because the other team was challenging, but I made him feel better by giving him solace.…
