I was headed to the Youth with a Mission base in Ensenada, Mexico along with a church team. YWAM is an organization that orchestrates various age groups to build homes and other pivotal infrastructure while spreading the gospel. After we arrived and settled, a short briefing was made on what we would do throughout the two weeks and how we could effectively share the word of God to the community. It was the following night when the shocking news had been spread that our team leader had fallen ill. The very person who had guided us through every preparation was no longer with us.
We scrambled to figure out an alternative plan. While some believed that having a YWAM staff as a new leader would be a safer route, others thought differently much to my shock. They emphasized that I should take leadership within the team due to my experience and crazed dedication to this mission. I wondered what I would need to show for me to meet such standards of being called a leader.
They say some people are natural-born leaders, while others obtain such title through their commitment and desire. What was it that I displayed for my team members to selectively choose me? This question would continually echo in my mind as I worked to be the leader that holds the characteristics of one. As the trip slowly progressed to a finish, our work had graciously completed and the lives we had positively changed were visible.
Weeks would pass on and I began to reminisce about the events that occurred during the mission trip. Looking back at the numerous photos and letters that were shared among the team, I had realized that the defining factor to my success as a leader was
