I. THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE BOOK:
The book Life of Pi by Yann Martel was published in 2001. The story is primarily about an Indian boy named Piscine Molitor Patel, who survives a shipwreck with a Bengal tiger. Unfortunately, this book is not a part of a series; the characters in the book do however, have an interesting relationship with the author. Yann Martel is from Canada, as stated in the book. The Patel family was moving to Canada, this is also the place Piscine “lives” currently. Martel got the inspiration from his story in Pondicherry, the originally home of the Patel family. Although the meeting of the two was in a sense ironic, it is still the perfect commencement for this realistic fiction.

THE BOOK:
The story of Pi Patel is one of adventure and courage.
Nevertheless, throughout his journey he only keep one focus…God. Martel’s main aim was to enlighten his audience with the miracles God can bestow upon the believers in him. In order to make sure his goal is clear, he emphasized the fact that Piscine practices three distinct religions. While Pi was on the lifeboat he continued to have faith in God. Yann Martel makes it exceptionally clear that the key to Piscine’s survival was that he stayed true to his religious conviction.
II. THE ESSENTIAL PART OF THE BOOK: At a first glance, the title of the book, Life of Pi, is puzzling. Chapter five does however, explains the significance of the title. A part of growing up is dealing with flaws, everyone has different flaws. In Piscine’s case his name was his Achilles ankle. People at school pronounced it P. Singh, Sikh, and Pissing. Instead of allowing this to get to him he changed his name to Pi, hence the title Life of Pi. As stated before the author Yann Martel has an ironic association with Piscine. Piscine is the guy with the amazing story and Yann Martel is the author seeking an extraordinary story. The duo was a match meant to be, the fact that they meet was perfect. Piscine could share his story with the world and Yann Martel had a chance to redeem himself after his last book
failed. Something else that is interesting to note about Life of Pi is the year the book was published. In the year 2001 Yann Martel wrote a novel about a boy from the 20th century which can be found at the start of the narrative. It is made evident, the difference in the era or time that Piscine was living through Martel’s writing. The variance in Piscine’s character helps to establish the plot of the story in a unique way. The main focus of the book revolves around Pi, his religion, and his survival at sea with a tiger. His religion however, above all, is the central interest in this story. It is the key to his survival after the shipwreck, the practice that makes him divergent, and something he can go when he wants to learn something new. With that being said, because religion is the central interest in the story it give Piscine a special reputation as do many other aspects.
