The symbol for this element is a man on a journey. Name refers to a way to describe or define a feeling, perception, object, or experience. Form is what is remembered to be associated with that name and is called upon by memory in future experiences. The story of Pi and the tiger, Richard Parker in the book, Life of Pi is relevant to this element. When Pi tells officials about his experiences with the animals on the life boat, they do not believe him. When he tells the same story except this time with humans instead of animals on the life boat, they do believe him. He learns that people choose what to believe based on their conceptions and expectations of the given object or creature from past experiences. This name and form step plays a significant role in dictating how we perceive the world. Along with the six sense fields, name- and- form give us conditioned truth. Everything that we know is conditioned upon something else to make sense of something else. In this realm everything is illusory and has no true essence or core. It is symbolized by a monkey picking fruits. This element focuses on the importance of awareness and being able to control one’s consciousness in order to gain a deeper understanding of inner and outer phenomena. In ignorant people, the consciousness jumps from one thing to another without giving anything meaning. This makes me think of Dory from Finding Nemo. She cannot focus on one thing for any extended period of time. She is scatterbrained and easily distracted. Consciousness is dependent on the forces that bring about the formation of the body, speech, and mind, which brings the cycle back to the previous
