Year Of Yes
TV producer and writer extraordinaire Shonda Rimes – best known for her shows, Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal – recently wrote a book entitled, Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun and Be Your Own Person. It’s a personal account of a year where she stopped saying “no” to virtually everything (except work), and instead committed to saying “yes.” No if’s, and’s, or but’s… just yes. Yes to all the scary, uncomfortable, anxiety producing things that take a brilliant introvert like her – and like many of us regular folks – severely out of our comfort zone.

You know the drill: “no” to public speaking, “no” to going out and meeting new people, and “no” to playing with the kids (because there’s work to do). So what happened? Did she go down in flames? Crash and burn? Break out in hives and pass out while giving that commencement speech? Nope. She lived. Not only did she live, but she grew in new dimensions that cracked her world wide open in a wonderful, even mind-bending way. She faced down her fears and gradually the fears lost their power. With her default set at “yes” instead of “no,” it was as though a new paradigm of thinking was allowed to emerge. The new power was in her, and she was liberated. She stepped into the light, got unstuck, lost 120 pounds, found her true friends, played with her kids, found and owned her public voice, and in her words, “became a titan.”

The Boston Tea Party is a very famous political protest that occurred on December 16, 1773. This protest was when many rebels that called themselves the Sons of Liberty boarded 3 ships and dumped hundreds of dollars of tea into the Boston Harbor. The men dressed up as Indians (Natives) to hide their identity. They threw over 340 chest of tea overboard, which took over 3 hours for over 100 people to throw the tea overboard. In total they threw over 90,000lbs of tea and over what would be about $1,000,000 today. This was an act of protest against the tea act and it infuriated the British that they passed a new act called the Intolerable Act in 1774 (I will talk about it more later). This protest was a very memorable one for both the Brtiish…

In the novel ‘Year of Wonders’, written by Geraldine Brooks, the characters who survived the plague in the small English village, Eyam in 1665-1666 all transform in extensive ways. Those characters who survive the bubonic plague all experience dramatic changes in meaningful ways. These changes are displayed in the characters Anna Frith, Michael Mompellion and Elinor Mompellion. The plague has pushed Anna Frith to react in unexpected ways as she displays change, leading her to move overseas and attempt to start her life fresh. Michael Mompellion also shows that because of the plague, he has been brought to the point of where the one he loves most, Elinor Mompellion, is murdered. The murder makes Michael resign as a rector and start to doubt God. Elinor and Aphra also experience change in different ways as Elinor’s trust and compassion for others grows and Aphra turns to witchcraft, in which both impulses result in the death of each of them. This is all clear confirmation showing that through the book where characters such as those mentioned continue to exist through the tragedy that occurred in Eyam, 1665-1666 and evolve in significant ways.…

My mother had been told by many teachers that I would never pass the sixth grade, let alone go to college.…

Despite being raped by a family member from a young age, having lived in a car and in a garbage can under a bridge, and being manipulated by an older student to have sex (eventually leading to having her kid), she responded well to the ten years of hell. Maybe it can be explained because she got used to trauma; after never catching a break in her life, maybe it just felt nice being free after getting saved. It was truly the first time in her life that she was not controlled by others in some way; she could finally make her own life decisions and live in her own, safe home. Michelle’s story is incredible not only because she survived ten years of awful treatment, but even more so because she bounced back stronger than ever and turned her potential weaknesses into hope. I wish everyone who has gone through something tough would follow Michelle’s example and turn their experiences into knowledge, helping others up along the way who…
