You Are Damned, We Are Saved

In the Doris Lessing’s passage, “You Are Damned, We Are Saved,” she tells us that she was raised in a country where the white minority dominated the black majority. According to Lessing, if anyone disagrees with the white, he or she would be considered as a demon and would suffer from ostracism. Also, Lessing describes a long miner’s strike in Britain, during which a miner chose to return to work because he felt that the strike leader had led the strike badly. And because of this, the miner was beaten by other miners and his house was smashed up. The miner’s wife was surprised by this. Also, We need to think for ourselves instead of being like a little sheep. For me, I agree with Lessing that the majority of people tend to seek absolute truth in a way that vilifies those who disagree with them because most people are often biased against others and treat them badly.
First of all, people are likely to treat badly and harshly to other people who have different perspectives from them. As Lessing mentions, people like to seek certainties. They truly believe in what they believe and tend to vilify those who disagree with them. For example, Cord Jefferson’s article, “How I Learned to Hate Transgender People,” describe a man’s attitude towards transgender people. The author, Cord Jefferson, openly laughed at a transgender person in a movie theater when he was twelve years old. It was also his first time laughing at a transgender person. Cord Jefferson was seeing a movie called Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, in which the Sean Young’s character, Lt. Lois Einhorn, was transgender. Most of the audiences in the movie theater laughed at the scene that Jim Carrey kissed Lt. Einhorn because they thought that was a joke.
