Rich's for an anthology. What poems would you choose and why?
I've studied Rich's poetry for my Leaving Certificate and have really enjoyed learning them. In my opinion, Rich is fine poet and I strongly recommend 'Aunt Jennifer's Tigers', 'Living in Sin' and 'Diving into the Wreck' to be included for this anthology. I chose these poems since they are personally my favourites. However, I also think that these poems are great examples of showing Rich's poetic skills and also I think that the poems gives a great insight of who rich is as a person as well as her beliefs. In 'Aunt Jennifer's Tigers', the speaker describes her aunt creating a decorative screen. The screen is adorned by an image of tigers prancing “across the screen, Bright topaz denizens of a world of green”. I also find it clever how Rich uses the tigers as a metaphor and symbol for male in this patriarchal society. The imbalance of power is evident in this poem. Rich's 'Aunt Jennifer' wanted to pursue her artistic ambition but found it was difficult and even found “the ivory needle hard to pull” and was weighed down by ”Uncle's wedding band”. This poem present us with great examples of the different poetic techniques Rich used to help convey the political issue. For example, the rhyming couplets and alliterations give the poem a sense of beat and rhythm, however, in reality and the content is bleak. I think this should be included in the anthology because from this poem we can learn that Rich is not
