What a Tragedy Can Reveal In the novel You Will Know Me by Megan Abbott, you see how the narrator, Katie believes she knows everything about her daughter, Devon. Further into the book we realize Katie knows almost nothing about her daughter, and the things she thought she knew weren’t true at all. Katie also begins to see and realize the people around her aren't who she had always believed them to be. A person’s perspective can be blinding, like a blanket covering what is right in front of you. Once something changes your view on something, it's like someone pulling down the blanket, uncovering the truth. A person’s perspective can change for a number of reasons, from something minor like someone’s opinion or action to something larger like a tragic event such as death. In the novel we see how Katie’s view of Devon was simple. Devon was in love with gymnastics and she was incredibly talented. Katie believed she knew what Devon wanted and tried her best to give her daughter what she needed to succeed. The death of Ryan Beck starts to reveal some things for Katie, especially about Devon. It starts off with small things, such as the anger Devon had towards Hailey that led to a fight in the locker room.
