Where Young Goodman Brown had seen people from his youth. The figure revealed them all as sinners, nothing that “evil is the nature of mankind. Evil must be your only happiness”(Becnel). The cloaked woman is revealed to be Faith. Before the figure could lay the mark of baptism on Young Goodman Brown, he called Faith to “look up to Heaven, and resist the wicked one”(Ellis). Then he finds himself all alone in the forest. The next morning Young Goodman Brown arrives back in town, extremely confused about all the events that happen the night before. He runs into many people he saw in the forest and all act as if nothing had happen. This story shows many types of symbolism. For example, Faith is Young Goodman Brown's wife is an symbol for Young Goodman's Brown faith. Although Brown dies a bitter man, blaming the wickedness and hypocrisy of others, he leaves his Faith first. Throughout the ages, Satan has been a cultural symbol of ultimate evil, and Young Goodman Brown continues that tradition. In the story Satan represents a number of things, of them being the evil that lies within us all. When first meeting up with Goodman Brown in the woods, Satan is described as resembling an older Young Goodman Brown , with Hawthorne describing him as
