Young Love Tweens
This idea of the girl being the sun is not uncommon in young love. Tweens first experience in romance tends to seem far more serious than it truly is. Young love is innocent, which is why it is affectionately referred to as puppy love. Tweens say I love you to each other without quite knowing the true meaning of the phrase yet, and they think they will be with the person they are seeing forever. Little girls get carried away with planning their weddings and finding a prince charming, and this innocence and naivety is not completely lost in the transition to adulthood. Tweens explore love for the first time from a place of infatuation and general fascination, and the speaker's first experience is no different. This girl lights up his day, changing a cold December day …show more content…
This light is seen once more when the speaker describes the orange he peels as he sits next to the girl while she eats her chocolate. The orange "[t]hat was so bright against/ The gray of December/ that, from some distance, / Someone might have thought / I was making a fire in my hands" (lines 52-55) is quite important here. Throughout the poem, the girl represents light in the face of December to the speaker, but here a shift occurs. The orange takes on the role of light against the cold December day, even used as an implied metaphor for fire. The comparison between the contrast of the orange to the bleak December day and the girl, with both being described as "bright" at some point in a poem, creates a connection between the two. The girl is the fiery sun to the speaker, as described before, but she also warms him like a "fire in [his] hands" (line 55). This description captures the intensity of the feelings of infatuation and young love, with a warm, happy feeling inside. Not only are these warm fuzzy feelings a normal part of young love, they also are in contrast to the cold winter

To show that, he also uses different techniques, for example, in the extract, “the lightning of a fire on a cold earth.” The comparison here echoes with the life of Ethan and Zeena. Indeed, the cold earth represents their relationship, cold being the exact word to describe it, earth being their cold house, the lightning represents here the arrival of Mattie, with all the joy she brings with her. The author creates a contrast between the coldness of the house and the heat of the personality of Mattie that she creates in the house. Ethane can feel the heat of Mattie and that is why he loves her, because compared to…

The two young boys are really symbols of heightened imagination and senses in that they see objects, such as an orange, in a very different way than an adult. The children say, "We're getting a cold," instead of saying, "We want an orange." The orange was as precious as a piece of candy and they felt that an excuse must be given to obtain it. The orange again takes on a new role as a role of healing, and relief. The author stirred my memories and experience as a child, which are like these boys' experiences. When I was in Japan, I got a cold many times. Each time I told my mom, "I'm getting a cold," instead of saying, "I want a melon." The melon fruit is harvested only in summer. It is very expensive and very rare in winter. However, I could eat the melon only a few times, and the best way to obtain it was when I was perhaps sick.…

Within the excerpt from the novel, Lucy by Jamaica Kincaid, the narrator is conflicted between two opposing forces, the longing for her identity and her familiar childhood, against the unfamiliar new environment she believed she would love. The new environment is too new and unfamiliar to adapt to, “but at first it was all so new that I had to smile with my mouth turned down at the corners” (Line 11). The narrator also wants to preserve her old self from her new surroundings which complicates her situation,”I slept soundly because I didn’t want to take in anything else” (Line 13-15). Within the body of the excerpt, the narrator describes a “pale-yellow sun” (Line 20), a metaphor and detail, to describe a different, bland aspect of her new…

He uses a cold winter day instead of a summer day to add to the overall tone of the poem. Hayden 's word choices in the second line: "blueblack cold", in the sixth line "cold splintering", and in the eleventh line, "driven out the cold", helps to further describe a cold harsh winter day. Hayden sets an image of a hard worked man with his diction in line three, "cracked hands that ached". Hayden 's words in line nine, "fearing the chronic angers of that house", gives the reader insight to the father 's demeanor. Although the speaker talks about anger to describe the…

In lines three and four the speaker begins to talk about nature. In other words, all the talking he is doing is about a summers day actually sounds like he’s talking about a person. The point in these lines is clear the summer is fated to end. As we go on to read lines five and six he goes on to talk about the personification of nature. He refers the sun to the “the eye of heaven” and instead of being boring and dull he compares his skin to a gold complexion entertaining us as the readers more and keeps us entertained. This is important because it describes the way he looks. It brings back the humor that we saw he used with the word “temperate.”…

The reader has no idea of it yet and is left thinking, wanting to read on. Next, the second stanza is filled with literary devices to inform the reader of his feelings towards his lover. For example, he says, “if I look/at the crystal moon, at the red branch/(…)/if I touch/near the fire” (lines 4-5 & 7-8). The author uses the senses of touch and sight to emphasize on the fact that every thought and impression he has will always lead him back to her as a metaphor (little boats/that sail/toward those isles of yours that wait for me) (lines 14-16) so that the reader has a better visualization of what he is currently feeling.…

The speaker enjoys many aspects of the fall morning. In the poem “When the Frost is on the Punkin.” You can tell the author really likes the atmosphere because in the sentence “When the heat of summer’s over and the coolin’ fall is here” it tells us that he does not like the heat of summer and he would rather have the cool fall air around him. Next the sentence “autumn days Is a pictur’ that no painter has the colorin’ to mock” this means that he enjoys the colors of fall and doesn’t think a painter could ever make such a beautiful picture as what it looks like to him. lastly the author thinks the landscape is wonderful because the ground and sky are so crisp and sunny we know this because it is explained in the sentence “But the air’s so appetizin’;…

Line 5 highlights the forest "to where it ben[ds] in the undergrowth". The deep, dark, undergrowth represents the aspects of the narrator's future that are unclear. This allows the reader to imagine an uncertain future in the brightest of settings. The happy, bright colour represents the youth of the summer turning into the dark, undergrowth of aging fall. This signifies that the older one gets, the more complex the decisions become.…

I remember on the bus home from camp. I was thirteen and so was she. When summer started I envisioned it would be me and maybe a group of boys I had yet to meet causing a ruckus every day. Instead it was just me and this one girl. In my mind, we’re still at camp as long as we’re on the bus and not at the recreation center where our parents will be patiently waiting to welcome us back to the real world. We’re still wearing our light blue camp shirts. I liked her, and she liked me. Honestly, the feeling was well beyond like for me. I’m not sure if that same adoration was mutual. She hasn’t shown a single sign suggesting it so neither have I. Satisfied with the phenomenon of this girl choosing to talk to me and do so again continually all summer. A girl who’s smarter than the average bear. One who’s hilarious in that if I say something outrageous for a laugh is willing to say something to level with me just make me laugh. Someone who also finds some way to get extremely cryptic and wise sometimes in a way I try to be. A girl, whose wild curly hair always finds its way to the front of her face. It all seemed perfect for this moment. Of course, outside of this prison we brought ourselves to we don’t live in the same neighborhood. Nor do we go to same school. In a few years unless something extraordinary happens and one of us moves, we won’t end up at the same school years down the line. So, this is pretty much the finish line; unless I man up, and it might especially be it for us if I actually do open my mouth.…
