COMPARING AND CONTRTASTING ROMEO AND JULIET WITH WESTSIDE STORY

COMPARISONS:
First of all (obviously) they have the same overall idea over the story. I guess that would be the plot… in Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet fall in love in Westside story tony and Maria fall in love. One thing that is alike in that is in Romeo and Juliet they meet at a party and in Westside story they meet at a ball. In Romeo and Juliet, Benvolio gets Romeo to go to the masquerade; in Westside story Riff (Mercutio) gets tony (Romeo) to go to the ball. The link between this is faded. Since in Romeo and Juliet, Benvolio and Romeo were related through family and in Westside story Riff and Tony were related through their gang, Even though Tony was not in the gang at the time. Another comparison is it had similar characters. Such as:

Westside story | Romeo and Juliet | Tony | Romeo | Maria | Juliet | Jets | Montagues | Anita | Nurse | Riff | Mercutio | Bernardo | Tybolt | Friar Laurence | The doc | Chinow | Paris |

I’m not sure if in Romeo and Juliet the nurse had a relationship with anyone but in Westside story Anita was going with Bernardo. In Romeo and Juliet the nurse actually looks after Juliet but In Westside story Anita is Marias best friend.
Contrast
The differences are quite obvious… first of all the weapons are different, because in Romeo and Juliet swords and poison were used but in Westside story knives and guns were used. Another difference was that in Romeo and Juliet the nurse was made fun of with inappropriate jokes and in Westside story Anita gets sexually harassed. The biggest difference in the movies is that in Romeo and Juliet, Juliet dies in the end by her own hand. But in Westside story Maria doesn’t die. In Westside story tony is shot by chino as he and Juliet reunited. In Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet both kill themselves after they thought each other were dead. So as you can tell there are a lot of similarities and differences

The Zeffirelli and Luhrmann versions of William Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, are similar in several ways. One way that they’re similar is at the beginning of Act I, scene i, Samson and Gregory are at the public place in Verona are talking. When they see the servants to the Montague’s walk by the Capulets servants, one of them bite their thumb at them. Another thing that is similar is when they draw their swords in the Zeffirelli version. In the Luhrmann version, they have guns that are known as “swords” but which are drawn in both versions of Shakespeare's play. In the Luhrmann version, the “swords” they use is a gun. On the clip of the gun, it says Montague or Capulet depending on who the servants belong to. In the Zeffirelli version of the play, the actors would use real swords in the fight scenes. To conclude, there are multiple similarities of William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet.…

The beginning scenes to “Romeo and Juliet” and “Westside Story” are very similar to each other. The beginning scenes were very similar to each other because of all the hatred in the air directed from one group to the other. This hatred led to both groups ruthlessly fighting and beating each other up. In both stories when this chaos broke out between the groups, the patrolling authority had to order them to stop. Apart from being similar the beginning scenes were also exceedingly different from each other. In “Romeo and Juliet” the sides talked about how much they hatted each other and with a hairline trigger, both sides snapped after one insult/remark. In “Westside Story” both sides were giving each other dirty looks and making each other feel uncomfortable enough for each side to gradually start fighting as opposed to right away.…

with his friends; two very different attitudes. The actions of these two are also very good examples of comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences between Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story. “What shall this speech be spoken for our excuse? Or shall we go on without apology?” (Lit Book) Romeo is very reluctant to go to the party, he is nervous and scared. On the contrary, Tony is happy and excited to go the party, he welcomes the challenge to meet new women. Last but not least both Rome and Tony are hopeless Romantics, and there is no cure for…

What would Romeo and Juliet be like if Juliet hadn't died? What if Paris killed Romeo, instead of vice versa? What if instead of occurring several centuries ago, it took place on the streets of New York City during the 1950s, with a bunch of fresh-faced youths posing as street toughs and dancing and singing their hearts out? Well, just take a look at West Side Story, and you will have your answers. It is impossible for anyone familiar with both texts to not note the obvious major similarities between the two plays. From the opening scenes in both, up through the rumble in West Side Story/death of Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, the plays mirror each other (Poelstra). It isn't until the last part of West Side Story, where Tony, our modern-day Romeo, dies and Maria, Tony's Juliet, doesn't (unlike the two star-crossed lovers of Shakespeare's work), that the major difference between the two works becomes apparent.…

Benvolio and Mercutio are complete opposites. Though they may be opposites, they are great friends in The Tragedy Romeo and Juliet. They compliment each other like cookies and milk. For example, Mercutio loves to live in the moment while Benvolio likes to be more logical and passive. When Mercutio gets out of hand, Benvolio at least tries to keep him in check. While Mercutio loves being the center of attention, Benvolio is more than happy to stay out of the limelight. They weren’t complete opposites though. One thing they had in common was Romeo. They were his best friends. They played different, but complementary, roles in Romeo’s life. While Benvolio is more understanding and listens to Romeo, Mercutio isn’t very understanding. His way of…

When two people are meant to be together, no time is too long” (Anonymous). Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and West Side Story by Arthur Laurents show the pure evils of acting extremely hastily and how it can change the outlook on the future. Romeo and Juliet are two young lovers who were taught to hate one another and who suffer deeply because of the consequences of fate. Romeo and Juliet’s deaths were sure to be tragic as was hinted at early on throughout the play. Both families suffer with the loss of their children as well as other family members. Maria and Tony are split from one another because of extreme violence, hatred, and the differences between their New York City gangs. Each of them uses their knowledge of the power of love in hopes of them being together forever. Choices both Maria and Tony made resulted in severe heartbreak, the death of three teenage peers in the gangs. Romeo and Juliet is controlled by fate, while West Side Story is driven by free will.…

The Nurse plays just as eminent a role as the Friar in the forbidden marriage of the couple, making all the arrangements in secret from the Capulet's. She also changes her mind about Juliet and Romeo after he is banished from Verona, and then sides with Juliet's parents, agreeing with them that she should marry Paris, only driving Juliet away even more so. I think it best you married with the County. O, he's a lovely gentleman! Romeo's a dishclout to him. (III, 5, 204-205)…

Throughout the duration of the play, it is obvious Juliet’s Nurse always wanted the best for Juliet, as their bond was always tight; however, the Nurse’s support for Juliet also played a large role in the disastrous death of both Juliet and her lover, Romeo. Throughout the text, the Nurse constantly went back and forth organising for Romeo and Juliet to meet, acting as their ‘go-between.’ A crucial part of the play is the wedding of Romeo and Juliet, which would not have been possible unless the Nurse delivered messages between them. As the play progresses, it was in fact the Nurse’s idea to bring Romeo to…

Romeo and Juliet is an extremely well-known play written by William Shakespeare in the late 1590s. It is a story about an ancient rivalry between two wealthy families which is defied by two teenage star-crossed lovers who tragically die. The play was set in the Elizabethan era in Verona Italy. Despite that the play was written four hundred years ago it continues to capture the imaginations of teenagers in the 21st century, and the themes within the play are still seen in modern culture. These themes include infatuation, emotional extremity and rebellion.…

The Nurse was the messenger of Juliet, and also kind of teased her a bit. She could’ve tried to talk Juliet out of liking Romeo. She did however try talking her out of Romeo, but she didn’t do it enough to where Juliet might have stopped. She was also like Friar because she helped out with the marriage.…

I find that these works of literature are similar in the sense that both the stories have a “forbidden” love in the storyline. Romeo and Juliet are from two opposing families which are the Capulets and Montagues. They end up falling in love with each other, and secretly get married, but Romeo has to vanish from the city due to him murdering their cousin. Juliet’s parents force her to get married to another man, Paris, but they are not aware of her marriage with Romeo. At first she refuses, but then she “agrees” because she makes a plan to make everyone think she is dead to run away with Romeo.…

In addition to Mercutio playing a role in Romeo and Juliet’s death, the Nurse also played a large part in their tragic deaths. Juliet’s nurse arranged the marriage between Romeo and Juliet then kept the marriage a secret even though she had many opportunities to tell Juliet’s parents. If the Nurse would have told Juliet’s parents about the marriage to Romeo, her parents would not have had her marry Paris. Another reason the Nurse played a role in their deaths was because when Juliet was desperate for guidance after her parents told her that she had to marry Paris, but the Nurse basically said that she should listen to her parents and marry Paris, and to forget about…

But it was also different in many ways. The concept was the same in all the movies as well as the play. About how two people can not be in love because of their family dispute. But no one knows why the Montague’s and Capulet's did not like each other at the time. But after Romeo and Juliet both died the Prince said that the families was both equal and that no one else should die. Both the Montague’s and Capulet's was mad and same that they both lost a child. And they did not like each anymore than they did but they also have to find a way to get over it and move on. They both lost someone cause they would have disapproved of the love that Romeo and Juliet had. The point to me behind Romeo and Juliet is brave but sad at the same time. I think that because they went behind what their parents wanted because they loved each other. They wanted to be together and they did anything to be…
