Robert Frost's “Acquainted with the Night” describes a life that is filled with depression caused by isolation. Many believe this could have been written from Frost's own personal experiences, since it is well known that he experienced a very sad life with the losses of many of his close relatives. This would have left him feeling alone and detached, therefore giving him the inspiration for this poem. When examining the title's literal meaning, one can see Frost’s illustration of how he is very familiar with these dark and lonely feelings that seem to come with the night. The night, and these feelings, are nothing new to him. He uses an exceptionally descriptive setting, diverse symbols, and a unique style to develop his poem. In this poem Frost uses many symbols like the rain, the watchman, and the moon to illustrate the speaker’s depression, as…

There’s a freshman in one of my classes who always wears thick, dark eyeliner and other excessive makeup. For a couple of days the other week, she stopped. The first time I saw her without makeup, it was weird; I had never seen her without it before. A few days later, she came back with eyeliner and a fresh layer of foundation on her face. I remembered the face I saw just the day before; even though the makeup was pretty, she was pretty without all the extra effects. That same day during class she told me about how there was a guy snapchatting her. They made a bet that she wouldn’t be able to go without makeup for two days. She continued to tell me how that morning, she put on her makeup and sent him a snapchat. He responded…

The zero tolerance policy strives to reduce violence in schools and make schools a safer place for students. Anne Atkinson, a member of the Virginia Board of Education defines zero tolerance as a “policy that mandates predetermined consequences or punishments for specified offenses.” The policy first became effective in 1989, but grew most rapidly in 1994 when the Gun- Free Schools Act was passed (1). There are many controversies about the zero tolerance policy including whether or not the policy is effective in reducing violence in schools, whether or not schools are trying to handle disciplinary actions in a fair manner, and whether or not all students are treated equally when punishments are determined. While many supporters, such as school administration, believe that the zero tolerance policy is necessary in schools, those who oppose the policy, such as parents, believe that the policy is unfair and ineffective in schools.…
