Zheng He's Second Voyage
The second voyage was in 1407; Zheng He went as far as Calicut, but he did visit Siam and Java. However, he stayed in Java because he was called by the King of Calicut to settle a local power struggle (Peterson 44). After Zheng He stopped in Calicut to give the King gifts, the king saw Zheng as an important precedent which contributed to the idea that China was the Middle Kingdom. Zheng had organized the expedition, but he was not actively involved in the expedition (Gronewald). Returning to Nanjing, the voyage ended in 1409. The textbook “History of a Free Nation” depicts Christopher Columbus as being a heroic voyager who leads his crew to destiny. The textbook offers an analysis of Columbus’ preparation for the voyage, which details his motives for wanting to sail to Asia. Columbus attempted to determine how far he would need to sail after reading a copy of Marco Polo’s “travels”. While Columbus was a geography enthusiast, his calculations of the Earth’s size were incredibly inaccurate, presuming that Japan was just 2,400 miles from the farthest point of Portuguese exploration, the Canary Islands. Believing that such a journey was possible, Columbus badgered the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella for 6 years before finally receiving three ships to make his voyage. While describing the…

Christopher Columbus made a total of four voyages in the span of twelve years, from 1492 to 1504. His voyage was not an easy one. He asked the king and queen several times for their finances to make the trip. Christopher Columbus eventually convinced them to allow him and his crew to go because he told them that he would discover a "back door" route to the riches of Asia, India and the "spice islands" - by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean instead of east. Christopher Columbus bought King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella gold, parrots, and spices to prove that he had actually found land. He also brought back with him the natives. While sailing back to Spain hundreds of natives died on Columbus ' three ships, the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. The king and queen granted him more money for his next voyage.…

After reading the First Letter to Luis de Santangel and the Letter to Ferdinand and Isabella regarding the fourth voyage, I have compared the two letters. They seem to be written by different people because of the change of environments. The First Letter to Luis de Santangel was written on February 17, 1493. Ten years later, July 7, 1503, the Letter to Ferdinand and Isabella was composed. Within this ten year gap, so much turmoil was caused by Christopher Columbus's discoveries. His curiosity led him to discover so much of what the world has to offer.…

However, he did help the English whaling industry, by discovering pods of whales at Spitzbergen Island. His second voyage in 1608, he was looking for a Northeast Passage through the North Pole just north of Russia, again he was unsuccessful. On his third voyage in 1609, he was hired by the Dutch to find the Northeast Passage, but his crew almost mutiny, so he explored the northeast coast of America.
