As a society we can stop cyberbullying, instigating, can stop influencing fights, and could even stop getting on social media only if you really can’t control what you're going to say. For example when the situation with Amanda Todd was so sad but caused by all the stereotypes that people thought of her because of what she did in high school. We should stop society from hurting people’s feelings so that they won't commit any harm towards innocent people because that what…
The article, “Social Networking Sites Can Be Forums for Cyberbullying,” (Foxman, et.al, 2009), deals with the issue of cyberbullying online as becoming a real threat, and parents and educators of middle and high school children must work together to combat antisocial and harmful harassment to make these crimes punishable by law.…
She states “The angst and ire of teenagers is finding new, sometimes dangerous expression online … parents and school feel powerless to stop” but still, there is the way to stop the bullies from the social network, Facebook (Bazelon 82). But unfortunately, she uses one logical piece of information without further explanation. Actually, in the real life, “social network … requires its users to sign up with their real names”; but in this problem about the ‘Drama Queen’ who do not reveal real identity (Bazelon 82). Bazelon argues this problem is not in the appropriate way and there should be a solution. On the other hand, in Johnson’s article he states “Social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook are online spaces where users can easily post information” and “Fifty-five percent of all online American youths ages 12-17 use online social networking” (48). His arguments showed that young people are more likely to use the social networks, and also use to video tagging and share comments, the users are need to be careful because “[cyberbullying defines] as ‘sending or posting harmful or cruel text…’” (Johnson…
While surfing social media, whether regularly or irregularly, one most likely stumbles across a picture with the text “Like this picture to support Haiti” or “Show you care about (insert cause here) by liking and sharing this picture with all of your friends.” On the surface, these types of images seem harmless and actually beneficial. People gain the mindset that if they provide support for the icon in the form of “likes,” then they directly help those that the image shows the cause for. The producer of the photo however believes that this type of mindset causes deeper problems than what the social media poster actually intends. People stop volunteering and start liking pictures on social media to show what they call “solidarity” with those…
4.) To what is known as our world, yet is influenced most of all by the cyber world. To be free and express what we think and believe it’s a delicate topic to talk about, since we don’t all think in the same way. We criticize and even offend our fellow man; this comes to affect them emotionally. On the internet, we are all free to do whatever we decide to do, not caring about our morals, there are occasions in which it leads to humiliate people in the cruelest ways, as symbols of entertainment. As in my opinion, the limit is the humiliation or culpability to innocents. There isn’t much control for these situations; just like it is said by Jim Gohem, “the internet is a loose cannon”.…
In “Is Facebook Making You Mean?” an article by Lauren Tarshis, the author questions whether the negative characteristics of Facebook on children actually outweighs the positive aspects of social media. The author writes using different styles to both emphasize the important information and also to hold the interest of the intended audience. She begins by telling the story of a young girl named Anna who didn’t think through the words that she commented on another girl’s Facebook post and though not intentionally malicious, deeply hurt the receiver of those words. Tarshis immediately recognizes the opposition as she goes on to discuss the impact of those words not only in Anna’s case but also in the hundreds of similar scenarios that happen nearly every day. She then continues with the topic as she discusses both the positive and negative impact that Facebook has on the younger generation. Finally, Tarshis presents her own personal argument showing that social media can actually be extremely beneficial, especially to those who might have trouble being social in the physical world. She also recognizes the need for and…
In a study done by the University of California, Los Angeles, sixth-grade students who stare at a digital screen for extended periods of time do significantly worse on a test of reading human emotions from a photograph than those who waste little time on their smart devices (Wolpert). Numerous young adults have become addicted to social networking and have not developed the needed savvy for proper interaction and relationships. The lack of empathy and the skills needed to read one another’s emotions in society today show the severe repercussions of lengthy amounts of time on electronic communication websites. Advances in technology allow for cyberbullying, a major dilemma because, without fear of someone discovering them, students can “embarrass, harass, or threaten their peers” (CDC). Just as the mask used by the savages in the Lord of the Flies provides anonymity for whoever wears it, social media acts as a mask in the world of technology. This disguise assists those who choose to embolden their wickedness under the cover of an unknown identity. Due to advances in the popularization of social networks, much of humanity has lost contact with each…
Social media is described as the potential space of interaction where citizens are simultaneously exposed to news and the views of people in their social network. While most people use social media only to receive friendly updates, obtain emotional support, or to flip through photos and videos they may also be subject to political persuasion without any knowledge of it. Frequently citizens are influenced by news media and/or social context when forming their own conclusions about politics. Usually political persuasion is achieved through the conversations people have because they can ignite disagreement, which in return leads to someone being influenced to change their views. The Internet and social media are also considered to be heterogeneous networks for the reason that it is very diverse. This diversity can attribute to the fact that people are shown alternate views on politics, which of course leads to the persuasion of change. Once an individual has been exposed to new viewpoints it boosts their demand for new information that supports their current thoughts and beliefs. Both disagreement and diversity go hand and hand with each other. Such a diverse network can lead to disagreement among people who believe that their thoughts are true and others are false. The diversity urges people to seek new views and more information, contemplate their own…
Visual technology envelops the world. From the moment one wakes up to turn off an alarm in the morning, until the moment the head hits the pillow at night with phone in hand, technology is constant. Even with this rise in technological advances, there are still drawbacks. One major drawback is cyberbullying. Physical battles breaking out in the school parking lot are not as frequent as in the past; now, the real action occurs behind a screen. People are able to hide behind an anonymous user name and post negative and hurtful comments about people they might not even know. With cyberbullying comes effects as well. Fat-shaming comments lead to insecurity, which can then lead to depression and…
The invention of the internet only made the explosion of information even faster. Teenagers put in on a blog, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram among others about anything, and have the information spread as fast as split seconds. This is how cyberbullying came up. “Cyberbullying is an increasing epidemic in our society and we, Americans can no longer wait a law to be a cure. A review of cyberbullying issues in light of American laws illustrates that the Supreme Court has been hesitant to approve law that will erode our Freedom of Speech rights” (McManimon). Cyberbullying is defined as a young person tormenting, threatening, harassing, or embarrassing another young person using the internet of other technologies, like cellphones, computers or etc. “Cyberbullying can lead to suicide. We are familiar with the stories about children and teenagers driven to desperate even suicidal acts after having been exposed to repeated harassment in cyberspace” (Foxman). Although the First Amendment protects Freedom of Speech, the government shall make stricter laws to prevent cyberbullying as it can destroy a person’s social life which can lead to suicide.…
One in two people who use a social media site usually unknowingly interact with older men looking for an opportunity to exploit a younger person. Many people message each other on social media allowing the interaction between these people who shouldn't interact with each other. Even though it's dangerous parents should take caution by warning their children of the dangers. At Eastwood High School the librarians teach the students the dangers of using social media making them prepared of the possible dangers. This shows that people are cautious and take advantage of how to avoid those…
After researchers do a field study of deviant behavior during a riot, law enforcement officials demand that the researchers identify the persons who were observed looting. Rather than risk arrest as accomplices after the fact, the researchers comply and turn over the names.…
Social media highly affects the modern society. Politicians of this day and age generally manipulate this influential platform to garner public attention. This overly effective utilization, however, is getting out of hand. Political use of online outlets encourages a biased, partisan media. Online personas of politicians disunite the modern American society by triggering political polarization—an individual’s identification of him or herself with a particular political party.…
Firms endeavoring to expand into foreign countries need to evaluate the country through both traditional quantitative means and also through a qualitative socioeconomic perspective. In his book, Borderless Business, Clarence Mann introduced the concept of the Social Process Triangle (SPT) to facilitate analysis of the “underlying dynamics of any society” (2006). According to Mann, those dynamics can be described as the interactions between culture, economy and politics (2006). Culture addresses the influence and dynamics of values on a market, such as religion, philosophy, and social relationships. These aspects of culture drive market preferences; for example, in India, Hinduism influences products in international restaurant chains such as McDonald’s, where beef is not on the menu (Alon & Jaffe, 2013). Similarly, Coca-Cola has rebranded Diet Coke as Coke Light in certain European countries to appeal to the local lingo used to describe low-calorie food and beverages (http://www.coca-colacompany.com/contact-us/faqs). Economy examines the specific industry and factors of production, such as availability of materials, education and skill levels of human resources, infrastructure and distribution channels. Political factors, such as how decisions are made and controlled, show the influence of government on business, and the perceived responsibility of business and/or government to support social needs is addressed (Mann & Goetz, 2006…
A main form of prejudice is in the form of bullying, whether in school or online. Kids and teens are teased because of embarrassing events and/or differences from the “norm” of society. Facebook posts, text messages, and phone calls can all be used to taunt and harass someone over a long period of time. New words are even being used to describe the prejudice ever present in today’s world. Cyber bullying, flaming, outing, all are used to describe different, hurtful aspects of prejudice. The common teen is exposed to almost five hours of media a day. Over that period of time, hundreds of thousands of hurtful messages, posts, and texts are being sent back and forth. The main receiver of these hurtful media items are usually of a separate from the normal group of people.…
