The process happens when atmospheric CO2 enters the ocean at the sea surface. It allows for continued uptake, it has to be transported to deeper layers. Researchers have surrounded planktons communities in big tanks of 1400 litres each to see how this system will be modify in response to surface-ocean warming. The researchers were very surprised to find out that the plankton would consume up to one third less CO2 at a high temperature. This causes a fading of carbon pump.

Researchers of the University of Gothenburg shows that eutrophication of the seas may have an impact on genetic variation of the algae. The genetic variation of the algae may be affected by eutrophication. Different population of a diatom species has different growth and adaptability characteristics from one another.
