A Brief History of Tattoos
General Purpose: To inform.
Specific Purpose: To inform to my audience about the history of tattooing and the impact Sailor Jerry had on it.
Central Statement: Tattoos have had multiple meanings in history, from honorable rights of passage, to the marking of slaves, to present day body ornamentation also the methods used to apply them have changed culminating with the inventions of Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins.
Introduction I. Original opening: “The woman must bear children and the man must be tattooed” is an ancient Polynesian proverb. II. Qualifying statement: I have been collecting tattoos, studying designs, and associating with tattoo artists for the last 11 years also, I have had more than 30 hours of tattooing on me. III. Statement relating topic to audience: In modern times most people have tattoos or know someone who does. IV. Preview statement: Today I will give a brief history of tattooing, starting with the evidence of the first tattoo up to the point of modern tattooing by Sailor Jerry.
Body I. The oldest evidence of tattooing on an actual human body dates back more than 5000 years (Smithsonianmag), followed by Egyptian mummies dated 1000 years later. A. The “Iceman” of the Austrian/ Italian border is the oldest preserved human specimen with tattoos. B. There are female Egyptian mummies with tattoos on their thighs and legs that have been dated at 2000 B.C.
II. Tattoos have had many different meanings throughout history, not all ancient civilizations accepted tattoos. A. Tattoos have been used to represent class, love, sexual maturity, as well as many other important milestones in a person’s life (Smithsonianmag). B. The ancient Romans band tattoos except on prisoners and slaves. C. Common folk and merchants were not allowed to wear the beautiful robes that the nobility wore so they used tattoos as an alternative
