Every young teenager has problems that they have to cope with, every teenager has some rules bound to them that they have to follow. Every teenager has some sort of responsibility, and every teenager has some sort of pressure, they want to show that they are relevant, that they can take care of themselves. But every teenager has a rebellious side too, and every teenager can feel lost, empty and abandoned. So what happens when the pressure gets too big? And the burden gets too heavy? What happens when a teenager has too much responsibility, and is far away from the safe place called home? Can they cope with their problems all by them self, or does it all come crashing down?
The short story is written I medias res, because we are thrown into the story, we do not know what has happened before. The short story has a third person omniscient narrator, and it is written as a stream of consciousness, which makes it possible for us to see and experience things as Ellie our protagonist does, which gives us the impression that Ellie is under the influence of a drug
Ellie is an ordinary nineteen year old girl who lives and studies in London at UCL. The one thing that makes her stand out is her wild nights where she attends parties and the drugs and alcohol she abuses. Our protagonist is not living the most wanted life, she is not happy about herself which we can see in the beginning of the story.

This quote tells us about her state of mind, she speaks about the dark, she says that it is the wrong kind of dark, and she is not implying to physical darkness, she is talking about the wrong kind of darkness within herself. It is too dark inside her, and she cannot find the light, her life is empty and meaningless.
