After outlining the learning outcomes the lesson starts with a ‘Find someone who’ ice breaker. This allows me to assess the learners, it’s a group work exercise to employ inclusive learning from the start and it creates a sociable, personable and safe learning environment for the session whilst incorporating functional skills. In this section I will use eye contact, I will call the learners by name and I will use a personable teaching style to include all the learners. We move onto some easy rhythm warm ups to boost self-esteem, help learners feel comfortable and build on group interaction. I can assess learner’s practical skills through observation whilst making learners feel comfortable with their mistakes and reinforce that everyone’s contribution is valuable whilst giving context to the theory that is introduced in the next section using a kinaesthetic and aural learning approaches. When explaining the theory I’m going to use words and syllables to help understand rhythms and notation. This technique incorporates visual, aural, kinaesthetic, reading and writing learning styles, making an unaccustomed concept of notated music familiar and accessible to everyone. I went to observe the preschoolers with Dr. Whitcomb and another student and also got to observe her teaching the children in class. Dr. Whitcomb used activities that involved movement, instrument exploration and call and response to foster basic music competence. Activities like Shake Your Egg were chosen to expose the children to music and get them to do things along with the song. I taught Jack Be Nimble so that the children could get exposure to a meter other than common time. Walk and Stop and Gallop were also a few of the other lessons that were taught to teach things like walking to a steady beat or improvising different movements to songs.…

In studying and researching the work of Rudolf von Laban I chose to focus on the publication of "Kinetographie Laban" which established his dance notation system, referred to as Labanotation, and it's effect on dance education within the broader education community both at the time and today and the many different kinds of benefits this has resulted in. I chose this because of it's importance and broad reaching effect. It was a huge breakthrough at the time and it is a very fascinating system, because of and in spite of it's simplicity, which has enabled it to be incredibly popular. There are many reasons why it is so noteworthy, not just for it’s uniqueness in itself but in the uniqueness in the large effects it has resulted in in so many multiple fields of research and education.…
