Describe how you might contribute to a lesson given to a group of seven year old children learning to play percussion instruments.
Following the plan set out by the teacher, I would firstly organise and set out the required classroom resources e.g. the chairs, tables and sheet music etc. I would then set out the required instruments needed for the lesson ensuring there was enough for the entire group and check that each instrument was safe for the pupils to use. Throughout the activity I would ensure that the school’s health and safety policy was adhered to. During the lesson I would make sure that the children were using the instruments in the correct way, offering support where needed, encouraging the children to behave in the correct manner and promoting good and minimizing bad behaviour. I would demonstrate how to use each instrument, encouraging the pupils to have fun and experiment with the sounds and different ways of using the instruments. I would observe each pupil throughout and record information if required. After the lesson had finished I would encourage the children to tidy away the instruments into the appropriate …show more content…
places, make sure nothing was damaged for the next use and update the inventory. If needed I would review the lesson with the teacher and pass on all information and any concerns.
Question 2 (Weighting: 5)
What might your role be in organising, using and maintaining the learning resources, material and equipment for this percussion lesson?
As effective classroom organisation maximizes the time spent on teaching & learning experiences, my role here is vital. Following the requirements of the lesson plan set out by the teacher, I would firstly ensure the classroom was clean, tidy and prepared for the lesson. I would set out all required music sheets and instruments in the quantity specified by the teacher and also bearing in mind inclusion policies and implications, if any pupil required any additional help & support. I would ensure the music sheets were in good condition, prepare more music sheets if required (checking copyright) and check each instrument was safe and clean for the children to use. Where needed I would clean or where required and if possible repair the instrument, updating the inventory of resources and informing the teacher of any low resources or broken equipment. Throughout the lesson I would ensure that the instruments were being used safely and appropriately and that relevant health and safety guidelines are adhered to throughout the lesson. Once the lesson was over, I would encourage the children to return and store the equipment safely, back to the appropriate place. I would then clean and tidy the classroom.
Question 3 (Weighting: 5)
Describe how you act in class in order to be an effective role model for the standards of behaviour expected in pupils?
Adhering to the schools written behaviour policy at all times, I would support and promote positive behaviour in pupils with praise and encouragement and respond to inappropriate behaviour.
It is important to model the behaviour expected by pupils, at all times. I would remain calm, be kind, be fair, consistent and respectful, guide, praise and encourage pupils. I would encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour and would take immediate action in response to any behaviour that conflicts with the school policies. I would remind pupils of these school behaviour policies and I would use language that the pupils understand and can relate too. Whenever possible I would use alternatives to confrontation and would always report any inappropriate or uncharacteristic behaviour to the
teacher.
Question 4 (Weighting: 5)
What strategies might you employ to encourage pupils to behave appropriately? Describe how you might react to incidents of bullying and violence.
I would always make sure pupils know what is expected of them, creating rules in alliance with the school behaviour policies that are clear and positive. These rules could be displayed (in the age appropriate way) in the classroom for the children to see. I would remain patient, consistent and fair and use verbal and written praise and tools such as sticker charts, to encourage and motivate the children and reward good behaviour, and discourage poor behaviour. To build self-esteem in all pupils I would praise those doing well, as well as those pupils who may be struggling. I would always be aware and be able to identify the matters that need to be referred to the teacher, showing the pupils respect, giving them time and listening to their needs and suggestions. Building rapport, and by being genuinely interested in them as people, is crucial in building positive relationships and therefore encouraging good behaviour.
Referring back to the school policy in place on bullying, I would always be firm in making it clear that any form of bullying is not acceptable. Taking any signs seriously I would assess each situation individually, remain calm, consistent, be kind and protect all those involved. I would record all incidents and refer all concerns back to the teacher.
Question 5 (Weighting: 5)
Describe how you might appropriately observe the physical abilities and skills of a nine year old boy.
Firstly I would gain permission from the teacher and discuss under what settings I should observe the pupil, e.g. in a group or whilst working individually. Carefully planning the observation is the key to its success. I would aim to carry out the observation as unobtrusively as possible to avoid any disruption and to therefore maintain a natural environment of the pupil. I would avoid busy times, remove distractions, make sure he is healthy, and ideally observe the pupil when he is unaware that he is being observed. I would clarify the focus of the observation with the teacher and the reason why I was doing it. In this case it is to observe his physical abilities and skills but other reasons could be observing learning, interacting with other children or observing other key skills such as social or language skills. I would plan what format the observation should be, e.g. as a checklist or a descriptive account and the best method of observation. In this case a participative observation, such as playing a game or role play together, might be the best way to observe the physical abilities and skills of the pupil. I would record information at the time of the observation where possible, in note form on sticky ‘post-it’ notes or a small pad and write up these notes in more detail later. Information would include time and date of the observation, it should be a true account of what the boy was actually doing, his interaction with other pupils and areas he may need help with, etc. I would discuss any assessments and feedback with the teacher. I would remain unbiased at all times and all information from the observation would have to be kept strictly confidential.
